Ocean Life: Fish Topic: Let's learn about the ocean/ Making Fish Print Objectives: Following a read aloud of the The Magic School Bus by Joanna Cole (illusrated by Bruce Degen), SWBAT:
  • name the various body parts of a fish ( gills, tail, scales, etc...)
  • make a fish print using paint
  • verbally share about student's own experience at the beach/ocean and what animals were observed/caught
  • illustrate student's favorite part of the book
Materials Needed: 5 different species of fresh fish...1 for every group of 4-5 students, 5 aluminum trays to hold fish, natural dyes-not edible, tempera paints, paper to print on, trays, plats, or recycled materials to hold dyes and/or paints, newspapers, clothespins Procedure: Lay out newspapers to protect work surface area. Pour dyes and/paints into trays, plates or recycled materials. Place one fist in each aluminum tray. Each student will choose to work with dyes or paints and applies (brush) to the fish. Student will then place the paper on the fish and press it down on top of the fish. The painting will have the fish attributes such as eyes, scales, etc...Students then choose a name for the fish, write it on the painting and hang it on a clothesline around the classroom with clothespins. Here is an example of the fish printing process called Gyotaku http://www.mauigateway.com/~gyotaku/

Oceans cover almost 3/4 of the Earth's surface and contain roughly 97% of the Earth's water supply. Life on Earth originated in the salty seas, and contines to be home to an incredibly diverse web of life. The Earth's oceans are all connected to one another. There are four oceans: the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic. There are also many seas (smaller branches of an ocean); seas are partly enclosed by land. The largest seas are the South China Sea, the Caribbean Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea. To find out why the oceans are salty and what causes waves and tides, click here. Ocean Life
The oceans are full of life . A variety of animals and plants must survive together. Invertebrates like crabs, starfish and worms roam the sea floors. Coral grow in large numbers, creating a home for these creatures. All of these animals are called invertebrates, because they don't have a backbone. Meanwhile, schools of fish roam the depths also looking for a bite to eat. The triggerfish looks for a wandering crab in a reef while a group of tuna pass by. They must stay alert, because the ferocious tiger shark is looking for its prey. In shallow depths , the plant life flourishes. Sunlight beams down on the different types of algae. These simple plants serve as food for many animals of the sea. Not only are they important to the food chain, they are also used by people in toothpaste, make-up and even clothes! In the deeper parts of the ocean, the largest animal known is swimming around. The giant blue whale , which can reach 80 feet in length, is a mammal. A family of dolphins plays nearby, but must beware of the pod of killer whales looking for a meal. Together, these plants and animals make up what we call sea life. Scientists say that life began in the seas, which means that without these creatures, we would not exist. Use the table below to learn all about different sea life.

18. Fish And Ocean Life Themed Page!
This could be either a fishing/camping type party or an ocean fish type party.fish and chips are great for a fishing party. Gummy fish and gold fish also.
http://www.angelfire.com/pa4/parties/fish.html
Fishing/Camping Party
Theme
I have this theme divided 2 different ways. This could be either a fishing/camping type party or an ocean fish type party. Fish and chips are great for a fishing party. Gummy fish and gold fish also. If you opt for the fishing party then you will need some assistance from dad for some of the ideas.
Menu Ideas
Smores are great for this. You can lie all the ingredients out - graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallows - and the kids can make their own.
Decorations
Games
Set up a bucket with little trinkets in it. The type that you get in the gumball machine. Little rings, necklaces, etc. You can usually get these in a party favor pack. There is a bunch in a package and it is pretty cheap. Put up a blanket wall in front of the bucket and get a "fishing pole". You can either purchase a little plastic one from the store or make one out of string and stick with some kind of a hook. Remember that the kids will have this pole and you don't want to have a sharp hook on it. Some children tend to be a little aggressive when they have a sharp object in their possession! They "cast" the hook over the blanket and see what they can catch. Have dad take the boys fishing at a near by pond or lake. Tell all the boys on their invitations to bring their poles with them. This might not be a good idea if this will be a LARGE party.
Get a large bucket and several large zip lock bags. You will also need to have a fish catcher (the type you use on aquarium fish) and let the kids go fishing. Make sure there are enough fish for all the guests. When a child catches a fish he gets to put it in his bag to take home. This is best done when the kids are on the way out - and don't forget to put some water in the bags before the fish go in them!

bluefins are also among the most valuable fish individual bluefins These marine lifefacts come from the Smithsonian Institution's ocean Planet exhibition
http://seawifs.gsfc.nasa.gov/OCEAN_PLANET/HTML/education_marine_life_factsheet.h
"OCEAN PLANET" MARINE LIFE FACTS
  • The oceans contain 99 percent of the living space on the planet.
  • The blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus, is the largest known animal ever to have lived on sea or land. Individuals can reach more than 110 feet and weigh nearly 200 tons_more than the weight of 50 adult elephants. The blue whale's blood vessels are so broad that a full-grown trout could swim through them, and the vessels serve a heart the size of a small car.
  • Hydrothermal vents, fractures in the sea floor that spew sulphur compounds, support the only complex ecosystem known to run on chemicals, rather than energy from the sun. Gigantic tubeworms and mussels thrive in densities of up to 65 pounds per square foot around vents.
  • The oarfish, Regalecus glesne, is the longest bony fish in the world. With its snakelike body_sporting a magnificent red fin along its 50-foot length_horselike face and blue gills, it accounts for many sea-serpent sightings.
  • Green turtles can migrate more than 1,400 miles to lay their eggs.
