Fisheries Council Of Canada
The Fisheries Council of Canada (FCC) is a non-profit, private sector trade association representing companies engaged in the growing, harvesting, processing, and marketing of fish and seafood. The Council is a federation of like-minded fisheries and seafood associations and enterprises that support shared, fundamental principles. The Council acts to ensure that the conservation of the resource will be the basis of sustainable fisheries and seafood supply for consumers and works to strengthen members' capabilities to be economically viable. The organization was first formed in 1915 as the Canadian Fisheries Association, changing its name to the Fisheries Council of Canada in 1945. Currently, the Council and its member associations represent more than 135 member companies in Atlantic Canada, Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and Nunavut. These member companies produce over 80% of the fish and seafood products produced from the Atlantic fisheries. Member companies also harvest a significant portion of the fisheries resources of Canada's Atlantic fisheries. In addition, more than 45 Canadian and international companies and institutions involved in the industry are associate members of the Fisheries Council of Canada. The main objective of the FCC is to promote the interests of the Canadian fish and seafood industry by making effective representations to the appropriate federal ministers and departmental officials. FCC maintains ongoing liaison with ministers and officials of numerous federal government departments, federal agencies, the House of Commons, the Senate, and parliamentary committees which have specific responsibilities affecting the fishing industry.
