Why Work in Florida? Tradition Vision ... Benefits
Why work in Florida?
Florida is the vacation destination of millions of people per year and you could choose to live here! Discover endless beaches, perpetual sun and surf, and commit your coats and sweaters to permanent storage. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the beautiful St. Johns River, just a 90-minute drive from Orlando, St. Augustine is one of the most diverse vacation sites in Florida.
St. Augustine, founded in 1565, is America's oldest permanently settled European city. A combination of old world charm, national monuments, and more than 20 unique attractions, St. Augustine is an architectural masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance and Colonial Revival styles. Lanes of art galleries, antique shops and collectibles; it is the perfect setting for a romantic dinner and live entertainment in one of the more than 150 fine restaurants, bistros and night clubs.
Just north of St. Augustine is Ponte Vedra Beach, the golf and tennis home of the PGA TOUR and the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) International Headquarters. Is it any wonder why the World Golf Hall of Fame and Village selected this area for its new facility? It reflects the hundreds of golf courses available year round in Florida.

This educational Web site from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection offers an in-depth exploration of Florida's freshwater springs and the aquifer that supports them. The site includes many informal (and highly visual) learning opportunities, such as an animated demonstration of the hydrologic cycle and classroom lesson plans based on Web site content. The four lessons plans (one each for grades 1-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) emphasize ecosystem interconnectivity and how human activity impacts groundwater resources. [RS]

BIO2010: Transforming Undergraduate Education for Future Research is the product of the National Research Council's Committee on Undergraduate Biology Education to Prepare Research Scientists for the 21st Century. Offered by the National Academies Press as a free electronic report, BIO2010 details recommendations for "bringing undergraduate biology education up to the speed of today's research fast track." The report emphasizes a highly interdisciplinary approach to learning biology, with a stronger focus on the physical sciences and mathematics than is currently in place. Biology faculty and administrators at the undergraduate level may find BIO2010 a worthwhile read.

Flags of the World
http://flagspot.net/flags/

Maintained by a staff of editors from around the world, the Flags of the World Web site contains over 18,000 pages of information about flags and over 32,000 images of flags. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the site is the multitude of ways in which users can look for different flags: by country; page title; date of last page update; and most interestingly, topic. Some of these topics include oil companies, pirates, signal flags, weather flags, and flags in movies. Each flag page includes information about the flag's history, the flag's symbology, and in some cases, different incarnations of the nation's flag. For users hoping to learn more about the study of flags (i.e., vexillology), there is a thorough glossary of words commonly used in the field. The site is rounded out by a section that answers frequently asked questions, such as "How do you hang a flag at half mast?" and "Why are these flags similar?" [KMG]

Stand Up for Fine Arts It is time for Fine Arts advocates to stand up for general education funding! Notice below an excerpt from the Orlando Sentinel - Feb. 24, 2002 "Tax-cut zeal now pains schools" which notes that Florida is now 49th in per-capita spending in education. Notice the quote from Speaker of the House Feeney. In Polk County, music educators are bringing their boosters and interested community members together to discuss the situation, and perhaps how to approach legislators about the ongoing problems being caused by the lack of funding for public schools. I suggest to you that we cannot, as Fine Arts advocates alone, solve problems for our programs unless we work to remedy the general education funding problems. From previous experience, our advocates have shown themselves to be the most willing to speak up for our programs and quality education in general. It is time to ask our advocates to insist on excellence in education for Florida public schools generally. What can you do?
