UF to release Florida geography CD-ROM to state By LAWRENCE WISE Contributing Writer Thanks to UF's department of urban and regional planning, school children now will have access to a detailed geographic library on CD-ROM. A computer program designed by UF's Geoplan Center makes geographic information available to Florida residents. "We're all happy about this," project co-investigator Richard Schneider said. "This is an excellent development that is good for the state and good for the people involved." The project coordinators will release the CD-ROM's viewer in one month, said Paul Zwick, principal investigator for the project. The viewer will allow any Florida resident with a CD-ROM to access this information. For each of the state's 67 counties, the project compiled 80 categories of detailed geographic information collected by multiple state and local agencies, nonprofit organizations and private companies into a geographic library on CD-ROM. Previously, the technical form of the data made using the information difficult for the general public. The viewer allows them to use the data. The center, a Geographic Information System research and teaching facility, will make the CD-ROM and viewer available for $20 per county or $1000 for information on the entire state. This information includes data on each county's land use, soil, roads, habitat and tax information in addition to satellite images and aerial photographs.

He arrived at Cedar Key in October, seven weeks after setting out from Indiana on a "thousand-mile walk to the Gulf." Muir's journal account of the adventure, which was published in 1916, two years after his death, includes interesting glimpses of the quality of life in the post- Civil War South. "The traces of war," he wrote, "are not only apparent on the broken fields, mills and woods ruthlessly slaughtered, but also on the countenances of the people." Florida deeply impressed the twenty-nine year old Muir. Back Text reads: He remembered the "watery and vide-tied" land where "the streams are still young" which he had seen and sampled on his way from Fernandina. It was while recovering from a bout with malaria in Cedar Key that Muir first expressed his belief that nature was valuable for its own sake , not only because it was useful for man. This principle guided John Muir throughout his life. In early 1868, he left Cedar key and eventually settled in California, where he helped establish the Yosemite National Park and, in 1892, the Sierra Club, which became one of our nation's best known environmental organizations.
