A Teacher's Guide to Distance Learning Distance learning applications in higher education and industry are growing at a rapid pace. It is now possible to obtain a college degree without physically attending a traditional class. Likewise, numerous companies are using distance learning technologies to distribute training courses to employees on a worldwide basis. Distance learning in K-12 education is not as prevalent as it is in the adult world due to the need to supervise young students. There are, however, many forms of distance learning that are becoming increasingly common in schools throughout the world. The K-12 applications for distance learning include:
  • Instruction for Homebound Students
  • Virtual High Schools
  • Instruction for Distributed Classes
  • Interactions with Outside Experts
  • Mentoring and Tutoring of Distant Students
  • Collaborative Projects
  • Access to Remote Resources
  • Staff Development Programs
Instruction for Homebound Students
Distance learning technologies offer a variety of options for students, who, for one reason or another, are unable to attend school. There are many options for meeting the needs of the homebound students. For example, videotapes can be sent of the classes, Internet connections can be established for e-mail and conferencing, or two-way interactive video systems can be installed. Example: Mr. James was teaching a class with four students and all four were confined to their homes. Through a project organized by Pinellas County in Florida, he is able to communicate with his students through computers and telecommunications. In particular:

    http://www.elearnspace.org/K12.htm
elearnspace. everything elearning. General Home K - 12 Overview Many schools have implemented technology at various stages - from enhancing regular classroom instruction to completely online courses. The response from parents and students has generally been very positive. Students are able to access courses not normally offered at their school, "pick up" failed courses, or reduce their class workload by taking a course online during summer months. Some school districts (and even some states) provide all students and teachers with computers. K - 12 students are great candidates for elearning...but for different reasons than adult learners. For elearning to work at the K - 12 level, the focus has to be on "how does technology enhance the learning process". Corporate/higher education elearning markets are driven by financial factors, strategic goals, knowledge management, compliance training, etc. K - 12 elearning is driven by increased learning and increased access to learning. A lesson worth visiting by corporations and higher education.

    Algebra Across The Wire
The UT TeleLearning Center (UTTLC) at the University of Texas at Austin delivers six high school classes by audioconferencing . The classes include Health Science Technology Education, TeleLanguage (Spanish and German), TeleRap (a roundtable discussion for teenagers), and a special migrant student program called Algebra Across the Wire. All courses are approved by the Texas Education Agency, count toward graduation, and fulfill Texas essential elements. Algebra Across the Wire is funded by a Texas Education Agency Migrant Student Program contract. Migrant students usually withdraw from schools, attend classes in various states, and then return to their original school. Unfortunately, this often results in partial credits that do not count toward graduation. Therefore, Algebra Across the Wire offers an alternative credit option to secondary migrant students as they travel or attend summer school. For more information about this program, contact: Darcy Walsh Hardy, Ph.D., Director, UT TeleLearning Center, The University of Texas at Austin, EIMC, P.O. Box 7700, Austin, 78713.
