Reclaiming the Everglades includes a rich diversity of unique or rare materials: personal correspondence, essays, typescripts, reports and memos; photographs, maps and postcards; and publications from individuals and the government. Major topics and issues illustrated include the establishment of the Everglades National Park; the growth of the modern conservation movement and its institutions, including the National Audubon Society; the evolving role of women on the political stage; the treatment of Native Americans; rights of individual citizens or private corporations vs. the public interest; and accountability of government as trustees of public resources, whether for the purposes of development, reclamation, or environmental protection. The materials in this online compilation are drawn from sixteen physical collections housed in the archives and special collections of the University of Miami, Florida International University and the Historical Museum of Southern Florida.

The Latin American and Caribbean Center (LACC) is a federally supported National Resource Center for Foreign Language and Area Studies with a mandate to promote graduate and undergraduate education on Latin America and the Caribbean. As part of that mandate, LACC has allocated funds to support students in their study of the region. LACC also has programs that offer support to students from the region who study an array of disciplines within the Florida State University System. LACC support may come in the following forms. Tuition Waivers. LACC’s Florida Caribbean Institute (FCI) and Florida-Mexico Institute (FMI) award tuition waivers annually to help both undergraduate and graduate students from these respective regions meet the financial costs of studying in the United States. These waivers pay the out-of-state portion of the cost of tuition for students studying in any discipline at any public university in Florida. For more information, contact FIU’s Office of International Studies at (305) 348-1913.

Delving into the Wilds of Florida - June 2000
The Museum of Natural History at the University of Florida in Gainesville has been collecting samples of species for the past 100 years. It is one of the nation's top ten natural history collections. Researchers from around the world use its 25,000,000 specimens to study plants, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and others species that form the rich ecology of the Southeastern United States. Natural history collections are in high demand these days - especially with the development of molecular biology and technologies, such as DNA sequencing. The value of preserving these collections has been demonstrated over and over again as scientists, environmentalists, and other researchers find ways to use these collections that could never have been imagined even a decade ago. The collections are used by public agencies, private groups, and scientists of many different disciplines for such activities as survey work, water management, and environmental impact studies. Unfortunately, this research is often difficult and challenging. Collections in the United States can date back 200 years or more and have hand-written ledgers for catalogs. Furthermore, these collections are held in many different institutions and good research often requires visiting or requesting specimens from many different institutions and combing the many specialized libraries for scholarly journals.
