Hello, I'm planning on taking the Florida K-6 Curriculum Certification Exam in January 2003 and wonder if anyone has taken this before. I have spoken to several classmates, some who've passed first time out, some who had to take this 3 times, and am a bit nervous to say the least. I've got the study guide provided by the college, however it doesn't go into great detail and requires the student to look everything up. Taking 6 classes and a Student Internship doesn't leave me much time to do that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Descriptions of Certification Examinations The Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE), which must be taken and passed by anyone seeking certification as a teacher in the state of Florida, include four tests. Depending on your background, you may need to take one, two, or three of these tests. Professional Education (PEd) - All candidates for initial certification (academic, degreed vocational and Occupational Specialist) will take the Professional Education test. This multiple-choice test assesses general knowledge of five content bases: personal development, appropriate student behavior, planning instruction, implementing instruction, and evaluating instruction. A passing score by the examinee is reported only as PASS(200 or higher) . If an examinee does not pass, a numeric score appears on the score report, and the examinee will need to retake the Professional Education examination. Subject Area Examinations (SAE) - Candidates applying for a first Professional Certificate and those adding a subject area to a Professional Certificate must pass a subject area exam in the field in which they seek certification.

These parts are content (knowledge of the subject to be taught) and professional preparation (how to teach effectively what one knows). For example: the strongest credential for an individual desiring to teach mathematics is a bachelor's degree in mathematics education . This degree usually encompasses both the content and professional preparation. But ... what if an individual has a degree but it is not in education? To illustrate, we will consider a situation in which someone has a degree in mathematics.
