... Go back to links to portraits of vice presidents. Served as president from 1974 to 1977 Gerald Rudolph Ford (1913-...), was the only vice president of the United States to become president upon the resignation of a chief executive. Richard M. Nixon resigned as president on Aug. 9, 1974, and Ford took office that same day. When Nixon left the presidency, he faced almost certain impeachment because of his role in the Watergate political scandal.
Ford had been vice president for only eight months when he took office as President. Nixon had appointed him to succeed Vice President Spiro T. Agnew, who resigned while under criminal investigation for graft. Ford was the first person to be appointed to fill a vacancy in the vice presidency. He also was the only person to serve as both vice president and president who did not win election to either office. In the 1976 election, Ford was defeated in his bid for a full term as president by former Governor Jimmy Carter of Georgia, his Democratic opponent.
Ford, a Michigan Republican, had been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives 13 straight times before he replaced Agnew. He also had served as House minority leader.

Served 1974-1977 (became President upon the resignation of Nixon) Gerald Rudolph Ford was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1913, under the name of Leslie J. King. His mother divorced when he was young. When he was four, his mother remarried Gerald R. Ford, who adopted and renamed the child after himself. They moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. In college, Ford starred on the University of Michigan football team, then went to Yale, where he served as assistant coach while earning his law degree. During World War II, Ford attained the rank of lieutenant commander in the Navy. After the war he returned to Grand Rapids, where he began the practice of law, and entered Republican politics. In 1948, Ford was elected to Congress. A few weeks before his election, he married Elizabeth ("Betty") Bloomer. They have four children: Michael, John, Steven, and Susan. Ford's reputation for integrity and openness had made him popular during his 25 years in Congress. From 1965 to 1973, he was House Minority Leader. After the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew, President Richard Nixon chose Ford, a respected moderate Republican leader, as his new Vice President under the 25th Amendment. Upon Nixon's resignation, Ford became America's first unelected President.

Doctors say the 87-year-old Ford suffered at least one minor stroke, but is expected to make a complete recovery. (ABCNEWS.com) P H I L A D E L P H I A, Aug. 2 Though his speech was slightly slurred and his balance unsteady, the former president felt well enough to lament jokingly that he might not have suffered the stroke if he had worn a fiberglass helmet instead of a leather one in his football-playing days at the University of Michigan. Ford will have to stay in the hospital for at least five or six days to allow the anticoagulants to take effect, his physicians told reporters at a late afternoon news conference.

    Biography

Nelson Rockefeller, (1908-1979), rok'[sch ]-fel-[sch ]r, American public official, who served one term as VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES and four terms as governor of New York. The second son of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Nelson Aldrich Rockefeller was born on July 8, 1908, in Bar Harbor, Me. He graduated from Darthmouth College in 1930. Early in his career he invested in a Standard Oil subsidiary in Venezuela and developed a lifelong interest in Latin America. In 1940, President Franklin ROOSEVELT appointed him coordinator of inter-American affairs and assistant secretary of state for American republic affairs. He left the government that year but was called back in 1950 to be the chairman of President TRUMAN 's international development advisory board. In 1953, President EISENHOWER named Rockefeller to head a presidential advisory committee on government organization, a group that ultimately recommended the plans that resulted in the establishment of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, the U. S. Information Agency, and reorganization of the departments of agriculture, defense, and justice. Rockefeller was elected governor of New York in 1958 and reelected three times. He inaugurated a dramatic growth in state services in the areas of education, transportation, health and welfare, housing, and environmental protection. His administration was responsible for substantial tax increases, and for many years the state operated on a pay-as-you-go basis with a balanced budget.

    74. Character Above All: Gerald Ford Essay
Essay provides a brief look at the circumstances and events that molded the president's character.
    http://www.pbs.org/newshour/character/essays/ford.html
    GERALD R. FORD
Excerpted from an essay by James Cannon Gerald R. Ford became President not because he was popular with the American public, not because he campaigned for the job, but because of his character. More than any other president of this century, Ford was chosen for his integrity and trustworthiness; his peers in Congress put him in the White House because he told the truth and kept his word. He was nominated for Vice President after Spiro Agnew was forced to resign to avoid indictment for accepting bribes. Ford was confirmed by a House and Senate that expected him to replace a President who was also facing indictment for crimes...... Ford personified what Nixon was not. Ford was honest. He could be trusted. Throughout twenty-five years in the House of Representatives, Ford had proved himself to be a man of integrity. It was for that integrity that the highest powers of Congress, Democratic and Republican, chose Ford to be Vice President, knowing that Nixon's presidency was doomed...... Surely character begins at home, and in Ford's case we know for certain that it began with his mother.

President Gerald R. Ford's Remarks on Signing a Proclamation Granting Pardon to Richard Nixon
September 8, 1974 Listen to excerpts from the speech as delivered by President Ford in .wav format (file size 2.3 MB) Ladies and gentlemen: I have come to a decision which I felt I should tell you and all of my fellow American citizens, as soon as I was certain in my own mind and in my own conscience that it is the right thing to do. I have learned already in this office that the difficult decisions always come to this desk. I must admit that many of them do not look at all the same as the hypothetical questions that I have answered freely and perhaps too fast on previous occasions. My customary policy is to try and get all the facts and to consider the opinions of my countrymen and to take counsel with my most valued friends. But these seldom agree, and in the end, the decision is mine. To procrastinate, to agonize, and to wait for a more favorable turn of events that may never come or more compelling external pressures that may as well be wrong as right, is itself a decision of sorts and a weak and potentially dangerous course for a President to follow. I have promised to uphold the Constitution, to do what is right as God gives me to see the right, and to do the very best that I can for America.

    Biography

Gerald Rudolph Ford, (1913- ), 38th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . On Aug. 9, 1974, Gerald Rudolph Ford became the first vice president in American history to succeed to the nation's highest office because of the resignation of a president. Ford was also the first man to occupy the WHITE HOUSE without being elected either president or VICE PRESIDENT . Both events resulted from two of the worst scandals in American political history: the forced resignation of Vice President Spiro T. AGNEW after he pleaded nolo contendere to a charge of income tax evasion, and the WATERGATE affair, which ultimately led to the resignation of President Richard NIXON Ford's rise to become the 38th president followed a long career in the U. S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES , where he was liked and respected by his colleagues. When he became president, his decency and integrity went far toward healing the wounds of Watergate. Inheriting a crippled economy ravaged by inflation and unemployment, Ford pursued cautious policies that achieved a partial recovery. He sought accommodations with the Soviet Union and China, and he helped preserve a tenuous Middle Eastern peace. But public desire for more vigorous leadership led to his defeat in the 1976 presidential election. Early Career The future president was born in Omaha, Nebr., on July 14, 1913. He was christened Leslie King, Jr., but after his parents were divorced when he was two and his mother remarried, he took the name of his stepfather, Gerald R. Ford, who was a paint salesman. He grew up in Grand Rapids, Mich. After graduating from high school in 1931, "Jerry" Ford entered the University of Michigan, where he studied economics and political science. He played center on two national-championship football teams and was the team's most valuable player in 1934. He received his B. A. degree in 1935. He was then an assistant football coach and boxing coach at Yale University, and earned an LL. B. there in 1941. He was admitted to the Michigan bar in 1941 and practiced law in Grand Rapids.
