72. The Combined German Program At The Claremont Colleges
Integrates a German language component into courses in nonforeign-language disciplines Art,Science, and culture in Central Europe, 15th-18th Centuries soc 154
http://www.german.pomona.edu/courses.html
German Language
The language program of the Unified German Program has adopted the following guidelines: i) Standardization of all language courses . To avoid conflicts at the home college, the courses in the sequence German 1, 2, 22, 33, and 44 are the same at each of the colleges. In order to insure continuity and coherence, elementary and intermediate students use identical textbooks and cover similar material. At the same time, to allow for individual preferences, instructors may add specially selected components to their courses. ii) Textbook coordination : The Claremont German Faculty periodically surveys new textbooks, which also entails a review of developments in teaching methodology. All textbooks are selected with an eye to audio, video and computer-assisted ancillary materials. We are using Deutsch heute, seventh edition, for beginning German. iii) Standardization of the placement test. To give students the opportunity to take the placement test at any of the colleges, we administer a standard placement test with a proficiency emphasis. Students are enrolled in appropriate classes across the Claremont campuses.

Course Objectives Overview of Basic Requirements Basic Requirements in Detail ... Learning Resources Online I. Course Description Thinking Through Writing is designed to help you develop fluency in using writing as a means of thinking and learning. Specifically, the course this semester will focus on culture-what constitutes this phenomenon and the ways in which people think and write about the subject. Each of you comes to this class with a lifetime rich in cultural data. As a consequence, you will be asked to draw on your experience and observations in daily life in Hong Kong.
The course comprises two major components: first, focused reading and response to cultural topics chosen from a textbook. Responses are encouraged in the form of journal entries and on-line discussion in a networked classroom. The first component concerns your observations in your own situation and relates to Hong Kong in 1997. It provides a background for discussion. Second, the course highlights the writing component, writing as a process and the development of an argumentative essay on a cultural theme of importance to your own culture HERE and NOW. The course will help you
