Recognition Program BELIEF - "Continuing Forestry Education is a basis for competent forestry practice. Those successful in growing and developing knowledge will also reflect that knowledge in practice."

Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) is an activity which is expected of all professionals, is usually inherent in the professional legislation for self-governing professions and has recently become of increasing importance to all foresters and forest practitioners. Rapid technological change, the social significance of forest resources, increased public awareness, higher environmental standards, greater professional demands and the ever-changing competencies required, dictate continuous learning and development if individuals and the profession are to better serve society. The CIF/IFC National CFE program is voluntary and participation is open to CIF/IFC members, RPFs and non- members. Its ultimate success depends on individual participation and individual integrity.

Significant Points
  • Workers spend all their time outdoors, sometimes in poor weather and often in isolated areas. Most jobs are physically demanding and can be hazardous. A small decline is expected in overall employment.

Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top The Nation's forests are a rich natural resource, providing beauty and tranquillity, varied recreational areas, and wood for commercial use. Managing forests and woodlands requires many different kinds of workers. Forest and conservation workers help develop, maintain, and protect these forests by growing and planting new tree seedlings, fighting insects and diseases that attack trees, and helping to control soil erosion. Timber cutting and logging workers harvest thousands of acres of forests each year for the timber that provides the raw material for countless consumer and industrial products. Forest and conservation workers perform a variety of tasks to reforest and conserve timberlands and maintain forest facilities, such as roads and campsites. Some forest workers, called tree planters, use digging and planting tools called "dibble bars" and "hoedads" to plant tree seedlings to reforest timberland areas. Forest workers also remove diseased or undesirable trees with a powersaw or handsaw and spray trees with insecticides to kill insects and to protect against disease and herbicides to reduce competing vegetation. Forest workers in private industry usually work for professional foresters and paint boundary lines, assist with prescribed burning, and aid in tree marking and measuring by keeping a tally of the trees examined and counted. Those who work for State and local governments or under contract to the Federal Government also clear away brush and debris from jurisdictional camp trails, roadsides, and camping areas. Some clean kitchens and restrooms at recreational facilities and campgrounds.

The Saskatchewan Forestry Association was established as a non-profit, charitable organization in 1972. From our roots as a member of the Prairie Provinces Forestry Association, we continue to work with the Canadian Forestry Association and other provincial forestry associations on many national initiatives. In Saskatchewan our association is seen, by many, as the foremost non-profit agency delivering forest education materials and programming to both schools and the public at little or no cost to the end user. We provide a bias balanced component to our programming ensuring that we can deliver objective information about the forest environment and current forestry issues.

Wisconsin's 15.7 million acres of forestland cover nearly half of the state. You might be surprised that individuals and families hold the largest portion (57%). About 260,000 private, non-industrial landowners care for 9.7 million acres of woodland in Wisconsin. 1996 Wisconsin Forest Ownership Privately owned forests enrich all of our lives:
(Private woodlands near Cross Plains).
  • Environmentally , they provide clean water, clean air, erosion control, wildlife habitat, and sanctuaries for hundreds of species of rare plants and animals and natural communities. Socially , they provide places for work, recreation, scenic beauty and solitude. Economically , they provide the raw materials for homes, offices, furniture, paper, medicines, paints, plastics and many products you might not realize come from trees. In Wisconsin, more than 1,850 wood using companies produce nearly $20 billion of forest products every year. Over 64% of their raw material needs are supplied from private land. Over 300,000 people's jobs in the state rely on the forest products industry. More on the benefits...

PR(97)04: Decisions on restraints of competition in the Norwegian forestry sector
The EFTA Surveillance Authority decided yesterday against anti-competitive practices in the Norwegian forestry sector. Decisions were addressed to both buyers and sellers in the wood market. Industrial buyers of pulpwood, organised through the Norwegian Association of Paper and Pulp Industries, are to bring to an end an agreement by which their purchases are geographically partitioned. Similarly, it was decided that certain restrictive clauses in the by-laws of the undertakings organised within the Norwegian Forest Owners Association (NSF), should be brought to an end. The Authority's examination of these cases originated in a formal complaint and notifications from the associations. Originally a third set of agreements were examined as well. These related to centralised or centrally co-ordinated price negotiations between the two central associations and an agreement between them to fix the level of commissions on the sale of round wood. In the course of the further proceedings, the parties declared that they would not retain any cooperation as regards prices on a national level, including the fixing of levels of commissions. Consequently, the Authority decided to close these cases. However, the by-laws of the Norwegian Forest Owners Association and the standard by-laws of its constituent local and regional forestry associations contain clauses which give NSF the right to negotiate prices on behalf of its members and to impose market regulations. In addition, members are obliged to sell all their harvested round wood to the regional forestry association in their respective area. The Authority's decision is that these specific provisions go further than what could be justified under EEA competition rules and should be brought to an end. The Authority has, however, not questioned the co-operative aspects of the by-laws, and it has recognised that some cooperation on the sellers' side, given in particular the large number of small individual forest owners and the concentrated buyer side in the Norwegian forestry markets, would be warranted.
