Mission Statement

The School of Forestry has adopted the following mission statement: "To enhance the social, ecological and economic value of forest resources for the citizens of Louisiana and the nation through professional education, basic and applied research, and service to the public and various natural resource management professional groups." The Forestry Major
The Forestry major provides an educational track to professionals in the management of forest resources. A University core curriculum consisting of 45 credit hours is required of all Louisiana Tech students. Sixty-five credit hours of core forestry courses, 5 hours of support courses, and 10 hours of electives completes the 125 credit hour curriculum. Students who plan ahead can take their elective course credits toward certification as a wildlife biologist or in undergraduate foundation courses toward a Master's of Business Administration degree. An additional academic term may be necessary to complete the required block of courses. Wildlife certification or business minor may be a desirable credential.

The Maritime Forest Ranger School provides an opportunity for specialization and skills up-grading through Continuing Education courses. The School's Department of Continuing Education offers short courses in two fields forestry and sawmilling. Forestry courses are offered to forest technicians and foresters on a wide variety of topics, designed to increase their knowledge in specialized fields. Continuing Education in forestry courses are offered throughout the year. Subjects range from communications to silviculture and provide a forum for recent developments in forestry techniques, trends and philosophies. Continuing Education courses in sawmilling are designed to enhance the skills of people involved in the primary lumber manufacturing sector. Courses are available for all levels of sawmill employees from management to machine centre operators. These courses are practical in nature. The Training Sawmill located at the Maritime Forest Ranger School provides a setting which is conducive to learning and experimentation. The mill contains a large modern saw maintenance area, dry kiln, lumber stress grading machine as well as all major machine centres normally found in sawmills in Atlantic Canada. Continuing Education forestry and sawmilling courses are continually developed and improved. Custom courses are offered if demand warrants. Residence facilities for Continuing Education participants are located on campus. The Maritime Forest Ranger School offers a wide variety of continuing education courses to assist in upgrading foresters and forest technicians in new technology.

They are designed to meet the specific study needs of, for example, part-time students in paid employment, students who live outside Canberra, or particular corporate clients. Flexible delivery programs may be taught in a variety of formats and locations, including:
    • in intensive teaching periods, i.e. in concentrated blocks of time over short periods, rather than spread over a whole semester
    • during the summer session, or at evenings or weekends
    • on the internet, primarily or partly using the web and multimedia resources
    • both at the ANU and at a designated partner university
    • interstate or overseas by special arrangement.
The ANU currently offers the following individual graduate programs by flexible delivery.
National Graduate School of Management (NGSM) programs
The NGSM offers coursework programs to around 350 postgraduate students. Its flagship - the Master of Business Administration (MBA) program - has been consistently ranked as one of the top programs in the region since its establishment. In recent years, NGSM has developed new programs that focus on leading-edge subject areas such as technology management, international management and industry strategy, in which the ANU has an international reputation. It offers Master of Management and Master of Management (Technology) degrees to provide greater choices for clients. Flexible options include the ability to take a single course and to have that course articulate to any one of a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Master or MBA program. Courses are taught in a modular intensive format. NGSM also offers courses out of Canberra and currently has international teaching programs in China, Singapore and Malaysia.

    General Information
Forestry is the science, art, and practice of managing and using the natural resources on forestlands. The major combines social, physical, and biological sciences to ensure informed management of forests and associated resources. What the Major is Like Foresters are frequently involved in managing timber, water, recreation, forage, and wildlife habitat. They also play an important role in improving the environment. In addition to managing the forest's many resources, some forestry professionals are involved in wood science and technologythat is, they study the physical and chemical properties of wood as an industrial raw material. These specialists are concerned with all aspects of the manufacture and sale of wood products, such as oriented strand board and wafer board, and with new techniques for manufacturing other composite products. Their jobs may involve developing new wood products or monitoring the manufacture of existing products. Undergraduate programs begin with general course work in English, mathematics, chemistry, physics, speech, and statistics. Basic forestry is usually studied in the freshman year. Because forestry is a diversified field, students have to choose one of several specialized areas. Introductory forestry courses and field studies conducted by forestry faculty provide information about these options. Once students have acquired this background, they begin course work in their chosen area. The decision on the specialty may come as early as the freshman year or as late as the end of the sophomore year.

  • To provide a sound undergraduate program of forestry education. The core of required forestry courses is based on standards for professional training established by the Society of American Foresters. Our program adds flexibility to help meet your professional objectives through the selection of collateral courses and specialized training. To support and enhance the other majors in the College of Natural Resources and other academic programs of the university. The philosophy of the College of Natural Resources emphasizes the oneness of the environment. To that end all majors in the college require training in forestry, soils, water, and wildlife. You can combine minors or concentrations in these other disciplines with your forestry major to enhance your qualifications as a forestry professional.
