The principle behind the program is simple. Each model forest serves as a demonstration of partners representing a diversity of forest values, working together to achieve sustainable forest management.

IPD Forestry Index Results: Forestry investment returns stabilize despite further decline in timber prices
IPD press release - 8 th July 2002
Investment Property Databank today released its annual performance figures for UK Forestry for the period up to December 2001. The Index is calculated from a sample of private sector coniferous plantations in mainland Britain with a total value at December 2001 of £69.8m. Independent valuations and cashflow details are supplied by the forest managers; the Index is calculated independently by IPD using standard conventions. The results are, therefore, directly comparable with those for other assets classes. The headline results are presented as three-year rolling returns to reflect the trends in UK timber valuations and long-term nature of the investment.
Returns to UK Forestry 1998-2001
Although access to plantations was limited in 2001 by the restrictions imposed to control foot and mouth disease and the investment return for 2001 remained negative (-1.9%), the results represented an improvement over the previous two years.
Timber prices dropped by a further 9.5% in 2001 due to increased European production of panel products; a significant increase in the quantity of recycled wood being used in board and paper manufacture; the loss of a number of sawmills in England; and the continuing strength of Sterling in relation to non-UK markets. Prices for Coniferous Standing Sales have now fallen by more than 60% since 1994. Against this backdrop, investor returns have held up surprisingly well and have been positive over this period.

The recently published IPD Forestry Index 2000 reminds us that the principal drivers of returns from forestry are timber prices. Encouragingly, the timber price index fell just 2.7% in calendar 1999. Although this is the fifth successive year of timber price fall, this is the best price performance for timber since 1994.
Since the IPD index tracks the returns from upland Sitka spruce, lowland forests, particularly in southern England, would not be expected to follow this return profile.
The long term performance for the IPD sample from 1992 to 1999 is a return of
2.1%. Mature plantations have been impacted more by continuing poor timber prices than young and mid rotation crops.

Reforestation.
Tree planting is a vital part of the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) role in managing the environmental health and water quality of the Nottawasaga River and its tributaries. The private lands of southern Ontario are among the more productive lands in the country. During the early part of the 19th century, large tracts were cleared of forest cover as part of the original settlement of the province. In some instances, these cleared lands did not sustain productive farms and were ultimately abandoned. Some of the many consequences of this massive indiscriminate land clearing included accelerated soil erosion, flooding, loss of wildlife habitat, and degraded streams and rivers. By 1910, southern Ontario was at its lowest point in terms of forest cover. Historically, there have been a number of reforestation programs in southern Ontario. Among the first was the Agreement Forest Program. Simcoe County perhaps represents the most successful and well-known example of this program, with nearly 30,000 acres under County management. Other programs such as the Woodland's Improvement Act (W.I.A) administered through the Ministry of Natural Resources, established forest cover on an additional 250,000 acres of privately held land in Ontario. The W.I.A. program used subsidies and provincially operated tree nurseries to supply affordable nursery stock, as well as access to free advisory and planting services. The W.I.A. program was made available to landowners between 1966 and 1993. The last of the W.I.A. plantings in 1993 drew a close to one of the busiest periods in southern Ontario reforestation.

Who Wants to Be a Forestry Millionaire? Created by David Oshkosh, Joan Rothe, and Paul Brulla Introduction Task Process Resources ... Conclusion Introduction Your great Uncle George recently died and left you a large wooded tract of land. You want to know how much this forest is worth. Are you now a forestry millionaire? Or, are you just a poor woodcutter? Your goal is to determine the species, diameter, volume, and value of the trees in your forest. Task You will be working together in small groups of four learners. Your group will be visiting an actual tract of land to complete this webquest. You will be completing a volume sheet while you are actively measuring your trees. When you return to your classroom, your group will create a drawing of the location of your plot. If you collect your data correctly, once you return to the classroom you will consult with your local forester or lumber company so that your group will be able to determine the value of the trees in your sample plot. As you complete this webquest, you will achieve the following outcomes:
  • Establish a fixed radius plot.

SAF Review - Top Forestry Resources on the Web
T he Society of American Foresters (SAF), in their March, 2001 issue of the Journal of Forestry, suggests several sites to use when looking for forestry information on the Internet. This March JOF issue deals with forestry extension and, more particularly, computer based forestry information and distant-learning techniques which are now more convenient and easy-to-use on the World Wide Web. According to the SAF review, "State cooperative extension services, state forest agencies, federal agencies, and many private organizations are publishing quality material on the web: The problem is finding it. The following sites are good points of reference for managing forestry information needs." Here are the sites they selected as starting points for finding information on the Internet: Tree Link - "Tree Link is a good source of online information concerning urban and community forestry...sponsored by the Alliance for Community Trees, National Tree Trust, and USDA Forest Service".
