Forestry Casualties In NSW
Only hours after the new NSW Government cabinet was sworn in last Thursday, four senior officials were sacked in a clean-out of key bureaucratic positions. Chief executive of State Forests of NSW Bob Smith was among the causalities. He was axed by the new forests minister Michael Costa - a former union 'heavy'.
The removal of Dr Smith appears to be a direct result of the timber supply crisis on the North Coast of NSW resulting from Premier Bob Carr¹s new national park election promises to the Greens. Kate Carnell, executive director, National Association of Forest Industries, said with both the NSW forestry minister and the chief executive of State Forests being removed within a week, it was now "ridiculous" for the Premier to claim that all was well in NSW forest industry. "The unnecessary new national park promises made by Mr Carr have made it impossible for the State harvesting authorities to meet future timber supply contracts."
Ms Carnell believes that because Dr Smith refused to confirm the Premier¹s dodgy figures, he has been terminated. "He was committed to forestry and was doing a good job. He did not deserve to be punished because of the Premier¹s mistakes."

DIVISION OF FORESTRY
The forests covering over half of Tennessee provide clean water, habitat for a wide array of wildlife, natural beauty and recreational opportunities. Forests improve our quality of life and promote tourism. They also form the renewable basis of a forest products industry which employs 78,000 Tennesseans. The Division of Forestry protects this resource and promotes its sustainable use through science-based forest management. Sustainable management emphasizes different uses of the forest in different situations, but always avoids destructive exploitation or lost o pportunities due to neglect or ignorance. Specific division programs include: Fire Detection, suppression and prevention, urban and community forest assistance, insect and disease control, statewide forest inventory and analysis, water quality protection, assistance to non-corporate landowners, forest seedling nurseries, forest products marketing information, genetic tree improvement
