Forest Management Why Hire Masswood? Masswood Services Forest Management Forestry Research ... Links What can forest management accomplish? People own forested land for a great variety of reasons. Most people who own forest land in New England are motivated by a love of the outdoors and the forest landscape that is so much a part of the region's history. Prior to recommending any forest management projects, Masswood talks with each landowner to ascertain his or her interests and goals for the property. The following list of possible management objectives, which is by no means all inclusive, reflects the complexity and beauty of New England's forests. Almost all landowners have more than one objective for managing their property.
Objective: Maintain the health and biodiversity of the forest ecosystem.

afrol News, 4 July - A community forestry management project in Ghana has been financed with US$ 9 million. The project's objective is to rehabilitate the degraded forest reserves, increase production of agricultural, wood and non-wood forestry products and strengthen institutional capacity. The African Development Bank (ADB) yesterday said it had approved a loan to finance the community forestry management project. The project had been conceived in the context of the Natural Resources Management Programme prepared by the Government to serve as a vehicle for implementing the Forestry Development Master Plan, which was launched in 1999 by the government with support from donors. It was to "involve the integrated management of forests, assist the beneficiaries to have sustainable livelihoods, enhance training for staff of the Forestry Services and strengthen the institutional capacity of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture," ADB says. The project further was to contribute to poverty reduction through the sustainable development of forest resources and maintenance of environmental quality. Increased availability of land to the farming communities would "lead to the creation of new employments and generate more important for the disadvantaged people."

For more than 30 years, Steigerwaldt Land Services (SLS) has been providing cost effective forest inventory and land management work for government agencies, private and industrial landowners. During this time, over 500,000 acres have been inspected and managed. SLS utilizes state-of- the-art silvicultural technology to meet the landowner's objectives.
Team Commitment To Success
From the initial planning stages to the implementation of the practice, SLS is experienced in all aspects of forest land management. Landowners must be aware that land and timber values are constantly changing. At SLS, we have a reputation for accurate forest inventory and timber appraisal results. The successful administration of a timber harvest requires careful planning and field layout, contract compliance and close supervision. Effective land management programs do not happen by accident - they are the end result of a skilled staff of professionals working to do their best for landowners and their forest resources.

PROJECT IDENTIFICATION Project Code: Title: Forestry Management and Industrial Use of Quillaja Trees Main Disciplines: Chemical Engineering, Agronomy, Forestry Engineering Area: Forestry
PROJECT DIRECTOR Name: Ricardo San Martín Gamboa Main Institution: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile Address: Av. Vicuña Mackenna 4860 Telephone: Fax: E-mail: sanmarti@ing.puc.cl
ABSTRACT The aim of the project is to develop the sustainable exploitation of the Chilean native tree Quillaja saponaria Mol. (quillay). The bark of the tree contains 4% triterpenoid saponins, that have been used for decades as natural foaming agents in beverages and cosmetics, preparation of photographic film, etc.
Each year 60,000, 30-50 year old trees, are felled and the bark is exported to the US, Europe and Japan. Since there are no commercial plantations, quillaja forests are rapidly disappearing with no benefits to the country. Exports of bark are US $ 4.0 millions, while the market value of finished products is US $ 12 millions.
Moreover, there are numerous new applications for quillaja saponins (e.g. adjuvants for human vaccines, feed additive, food emulsifier, immune protection for fish, etc.), that are limited by the amount of bark exported by Chile. With an adequate supply of saponins, the market could grow at least three times to US $ 30-40 million per year.

Percival Baxter's Scientific Forestry Management Area
by John Herrick
Percival Baxter was a man of vision. After all, he gave the people of Maine what is now Baxter State Park, including careful stipulations about how it should be managed. He left it to be "forever wild," and we can be forever grateful. Baxter further stipulated that 28,500 acres in the northwest corner of the park be set aside for silviculture and the study of forestry. Baxter had visited forests in places like Finland, Sweden, and Germany. These visits inspired his vision of a special forest here in Maine. This area has become the Scientific Forestry Management Area (SFMA). It is well managed, a splendid example of forestry which does not destroy the forest, and a beautiful place to visit. Jensen Bissell, director of the SFMA, indicates a beech tree being left for wildlilfe because of the bear marks found on it. After several decades of dormancy and several false starts, the planning and operation of the SFMA got going in the mid 1980's. In 1987 Jensen Bissell, current head of the forestry operations, arrived. Jensen is in his mid 40's, has tousled dark hair and wire-rim spectacles. This man can walk at a brisk and vigorous pace through woods all day long. He may be the happiest man in Maine. He studied forestry at Syracuse and loves the scientific, intellectual side. He worked for the Bureau of Land Management in Oregon for ten years and knows that there will inevitably be a pragmatic, economic aspect to forests and their harvest. As head of the SFMA he can combine both, and apparently there is nothing else on earth that he would rather be doing.

Opportunities in Forest Management
Log cost constitutes from 60% to 70% of the total cost component of a typical sawmill. Mill recovery and value can fluctuate as much as 50% on a per unit basis from trees with the same per unit cost. Getting the right log in the right mill at the right time has potential to increase yield and value by 10% to 20% or more. Advancements in process technology have allowed mills to get as high as 11.0 BF/CF (2.8 tons/MBF) on select logs. When you consider that a cubic foot of solid wood only has approximately 14.2 theoretical board feet of lumber, it is easy to see that our process technology is approaching maturity. But why can we not get 11.0 BF/CF on every log that passes through the mill? The answers lie in the logs and their unique physical attributes such as diameter, taper, sweep, and cross-sectional shape. How Can Mid-South Help? Modern technology affords the means to collect data needed to evaluate the mill performance of standing timber. Mid-South has intricate knowledge of sawmill equipment and process design combined with an understanding of silvicultural practices, forest management, and economic analysis. Using these tools

Notes on Riparian and Forestry Management
NORTHEASTERN AREA OF THE U.S. FOREST SERVICE PUBLISHES DESIGN MANUAL ON RIPARIAN FOREST BUFFERS
U. S. Forest Service's Northeastern Area office, which deals with state and private forestry, has published a manual (and specification) called Riparian Forest Buffers, subtitled Function and Design for Protection and Enhancement of Water Resources. (Publication No. NA-PR-07-91) This attractive and informative document details in a clear and straightforward manner the whys and how-tos of riparian buffers for agricultural and urban lands. Pointing out that streamside forests are complex ecosystems vital to the protection of our streams and rivers, "it explains the nonpoint sources of pollution of America's rivers and streams and emphasizes that' the removal of streamside forests has adversely affected the vitality of our water resources." Riparian forest buffers function, often simultaneously, as filters which remove sediment and sediment-attached pollutants; as transformers changing the chemical composition of compounds, (for example, nitrate into nitrogen gas); as sinks that store nutrients for an extended period of time; and as a source of energy for aquatic life (dissolved carbon compounds and particulate organic detritus).
