Forestry Tasmania: Woodchips Up, Logging Up, Profits Down
Date: 29 November 2001
FORESTRY TASMANIA'S ANNUAL REPORT: WOODCHIPS UP BY 17%. AREA OF NATIVE FOREST LOGGED UP BY 34%. BUT PROFIT TO STATE DOWN BY 34%!
It's an obscene rip-off, says TWS
It's official. Woodchipping and logging of public forests have accelerated while Forestry Tasmania's dividend to the state has been dramatically cut. The Annual Report of Forestry Tasmania, tabled in Parliament yesterday, shows that the area of public native forest logged in 2000-01 increased by 34% compared with 1999-2000. Similarly, the production of woodchips on public land was up by 17%. Meanwhile, the declared dividend to the state government was down by 34% - from $8.7 million to $5.8 million. "It's an obscene rip-off," says the Wilderness Society's Campaign Coordinator, Geoff Law. "The public's forests are being destroyed faster than ever before, but less profit will be paid into the state's coffers." The relevant results for the past three years are summarised in the table below: Native forests logged (hectares) Pulpwood (woodchips) produced 1.53 million tonnes

The Wilderness Society Media Release
Forestry Tasmania in Bid to Pre-emptively Sabotage Tasmania Together Recommendations on Oldgrowth
Date: 03 September 2001
Summary: Logging plans show proposed increase in public native-forest woodchipping of 23%. Forestry Tasmania appears to be attempting to sabotage the Tasmania Together recommendations on oldgrowth forests by planning a massive increase in woodchip production this financial year.
Two weeks ago it was leaked to the media that the Tasmania Together process will recommend an end to clearfelling in a number of important oldgrowth forests around the state.
Wilderness Society Tasmanian Campaign Coordinator, Geoff Law, who released Forestry Tasmania's logging plans in Hobart today, said the organisation has presented Premier Jim Bacon with a bombshell.
"Forestry Tasmania seems to have gone berserk," Mr Law said. "They are planning to increase woodchipping in public forests from 2.5 million tonnes last financial year to over 3 million tonnes for this financial year."
Production of woodchips in Tasmania reached record heights late last year. However, Forestry Tasmania's Three Year Plan of logging operations plans a 23% increase in woodchip production from public forests compared with the planned level for 2000-01, and a 65% increase compared with the plan for 1999-2000 (see attached graph).

Forestry
has become more and more "high tech." It's not all flannel shirts and chain saws. To reflect these changes, the forestry program at Michigan Technological University has adopted a new name.
What was once the "School of Forestry and Wood Products" has become the School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science . The university's Board of Control approved the change at their October 3, 2002 meeting.
"Today, foresters have broad technical skills and work with a wide variety of natural resource managers," said Glenn Mroz , dean of the school. "Ecologists and environmental scientists have many of the specialized skills needed to manage forest resources."

Biopesticides have already proved to be an effective and environmentally friendly tool in agriculture, specifically in corn. The same platform, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is now being used commercially in forestry. Bt is a naturally occurring soil bacterium. Insecticides made with the Bt bacteria as the active ingredient have been very effective against some leaf and needle-feeding caterpillars. After extensive testing and field trials, Bt has proven to be safe in the environment for humans and wildlife.
A similar technology, baculoviruses, is emerging as another viable, next generation biopesticide. Baculoviruses are naturally occurring insect viruses that are genetically enhanced to kill their target host more effectively. Most naturally occurring viruses take six to 15 days to kill the host. Baculoviruses work much faster on the target insect and have no impact on other insects, wildlife or the environment. The Canadian Forest Service (CFS) has been getting promising results from baculoviruses targeted against the spruce budworm. More trees are lost to this pest annually than in forest fires.
The Pacific Agri-Food Research Centre (P.A.R.C.) at Summerland, B.C. is also doing extensive work with baculoviruses. One novel approach is studying how fungi transmit viruses to insects. The Centre has also been successful in developing molecular technologies to identify and eliminate fungal diseases, which until now, were very difficult to detect.
