DEPARTMENT OF WATER AFFAIRS AND FORESTRY
MINISTER RONNIE KASRILS
PARLIAMENTARY MEDIA BRIEFING
19 SEPTEMBER 2000
INTRODUCTION
The week when Amagluglug triumphed over Brazil has also seen some successes in Water and Forestry.
As announced last week, the first part of our forestry restructuring has been successfully concluded and excellent prices were obtained, after tough negotiation. Certain critical sites have been removed for conservation and tourism purposes and tenders are already out for their development. These developments should now answer pessimistic comments that The National Water Act's controls on Forestry would render the forestry business unviable.
In this regard, if there was any doubt about the revolutionary importance of our water policy, I can simply mention that a senior delegation from the People's Republic of China led by a Vice Minister, is in the country to study our approach to Water Management and law reform.
The President's announcement at COSATU's conference yesterday that the basic water supply of 6000 litres per household per month would be provided free to the poor is a vital milestone. Clarity on this issue will allow us to achieve sustainability with equity bearing in mind that higher levels of consumption will have to be paid for.
Meanwhile, the Department's community water supply programme has now reached six million people; government's overall total is closer to ten million given improved water services provided by our housing programme. That is delivery.

Elections Focus Campaigns ... Contact 12 October 2002 Greens slam new 'forestry standard' as farce 12 October 2002 Labor and Coalition governments across the country have joined with the logging industry once again to try and portray Australian native forest logging as 'green and sustainable'. Unable to comply with international standards, they have developed a 'home grown' version called the 'Australian Forestry Standard' (AFS). Green groups have universally slammed this new move as nothing more that 'green wash'. Greens forests spokesperson, Marcus Ward (pictured), has labelled it a disturbing farce. "Australian logging practices are well known to be devastating our forests. The only question the media or the public need ask is, in order to qualify for a big tick under this new 'standard' will any logging operation anywhere in Australia have to make any significant changes?" "The answer is no," said Mr Ward. "Companies will simply get a big tick for conducting 'business as usual'". Business as usual, according to Green groups includes old growth forest destruction, massive woodchipping and clear felling of our forest estate at unprecedented levels.

MEDIA RELEASE New tools empower Canadians fighting for clean air TORONTO/VANCOUVER -In a summer of activism by Canadians increasingly concerned about the quality of the air they breathe, the launch of a new action guide and website will provide citizens with powerful new tools in the fight against air pollution.
cleanair.ca: a citizen's action guide is the first-ever scientific and legal primer on air pollution across Canada. In plain language, chapters identify the major components of air pollution, the environmental and health threats they pose and their major sources. It also identifies the most promising strategies and tools for citizens across Canada to protect and enhance the quality of the air we breathe.
"This important book should galvanize Canadians into action by providing us with a wealth of information and concrete ways to take action on air pollution," says Dr. David Suzuki, the scientist and broadcaster. "For those asking themselves 'What can I do?' this book provides answers."
The guide is supported by an interactive website

MEDIA RELEASE Network of forestry watchdogs tops 200
The Sierra Club of British Columbia (Coast Mountain Group), hosted the workshop May 26-27. Participants included representatives of the Gitskan and Haisla First Nations, Department of Fisheries and Oceans staff, woodlot licencees, loggers, environmentalists and silviculture contractors as well as other concerned citizens. A representative of the North West Loggers Association also audited part of the weekend session.
The workshop offered an overview of forest law in British Columbia, the function of the Ministry of Forests, the law of operational forestry and the role of the Forest Practices Board. Participants formed Forest Watch community groups and were introduced to the swiftly growing Forest Watch network.
"There is an ever-growing interest and concern on the part of citizens about how our public forests in British Columbia are managed," said Aran O’Carroll, Project Director for Forest Watch of B.C. "Our organization has been training citizens in how to participate in forestry planning and how to monitor forest practices since 1996. The Terrace workshop was another excellent session that gives citizens the tools they need to promote sustainable forestry."
Forest Watch B.C. is part of Sierra Legal Defence Fund, a national non-profit organization that provides free legal services to Canadian environmentalists.
