Why Hire a Consulting Forester?
  • Forest owners often have many objectives including: wildlife, recreation, timber production, aesthetics, hunting and more. A consulting forester will work with you to develop a land management plan that meets your goals and objectives . This is an essential first step for any forest owner.
Selling timber involves much more than hiring a logger to cut and remove trees. There are environmental, financial and sometimes legal issues that must be addressed. A consulting forester works for you , not the sawmill and not the logger. His or her duty is to protect your interests, insure the long term productivity of your property, and maximize your finanical returns from a timber harvest.
A consulting forester will seek competitive bids from reputable, honest loggers and try to get you the best price possible for your timber.
Why not use "free forestry services" advertised by some companies? Again, a consulting forester works for you. Procurement foresters (those working for mills, loggers, etc...) work for somebody else and part of their job is to obtain wood at the lowest price possible. They do not work for free and any work they do for you (i.e. tree marking, management plan, etc...) most often results in lower prices paid for your timber.

FOREST INVENTORY
A comprehensive forest inventory is a key part of a plan. Successful sustainable forest management relies on the inventory, together with an understanding of the forest ecology and growth characteristics of the commercial and associated species. Forest owners unskilled in forest measurement are advised to get help from a forestry professional. A forest inventory and a knowledge of annual growth rates are needed to establish the volume that can be harvested annually or periodically. In the case of beech species, they are also needed to measure the area that can be harvested annually or periodically, as these species can be managed by harvesting coupes of up to half a hectare. Precision Levels There is no set rule on the level of inventory required to establish appropriate management prescriptions for all forests (management prescriptions describe the methods for achieving the long-term management goals). This is because the forests differ in size, topography, species, tree distribution and density, the standing quantities and quality of merchantable timber and regeneration patterns.

Sustainable Forest Management Permits
Sustainable forest management permits provide for harvesting and milling capped volumes of timber, and last for 10 years. A permit application generally will not require as much detail as a sustainable forest management plan, but there are a number of features common to both, including the principle of management for long-term forest sustainability. PREPARING PERMIT APPLICATIONS The Ministry of Forestry has permit application forms, which describe the minimum amount of detail required, including maps. The title of the map and map series should be listed, eg, "Q21 Hawera NZ Map 260 Series". The Ministry of Forestry recommends that applicants seek help from forestry professionals experienced in forest appraisal and indigenous forest management, particularly when an inventory is needed to confirm the proposed harvest level allowed under a permit.

The Enhanced Forestry Program (EFP) contributes to sustainable harvest by making investments to grow higher quality second growth stands faster on lands available for timber production. These investments enhance the productivity of British Columbia's forests, while integrating social and environmental values. Activities funded to date include improved silviculture planning, incremental silviculture treatments, reforestation of backlog areas, and forest health treatments. Other investments in alternative silvicultural systems, habitat, biodiversity, and adaptive management contribute to social and environmental objectives as well as to timber production. The Ministry of Forests supports the EFP program by working with our partners to provide training, information, and tools to support more informed silviculture investment decisions. This Website contains reports, training materials, software tools, and other resources to assist in the cost-effective design, implementation and monitoring of EFP incremental silviculture and reforestation projects.

Canada ratifies the Kyoto Protocol
On December 10, 2002, the government of Canada voted to ratify the Kyoto Protocol on global warming. It was an historic moment for environmental protection. The agreement opens the door to a cleaner future of innovative energy technologies. But to get there, Canada must back its words with action. Solutions include: phasing out coal plants, expanding renewable energy sources and public transit, and creating new efficiency standards for vehicles and buildings. Mar 12, 2003

Due to the large land resource that the company controls, International Paper is committed to the principles of the SFI program, and is ensuring that they are adhered to by their wood producers. Their record of environmental commitment stands on its' own. International Paper works closely with state, federal, and private resource agencies to identify and protect certain "special sites" located on IP land.
In many instances the company has sold, or transferred ownership of these special sites to better maintain the sites' integrity.

59. ETHZ - Polyproject PRIMALP - Sustainable Primary Production In The Alpine Region
An interdisciplinary ETHZ research project on sustainable agriculture and forestry in the Alpine region. Read project presentation, abstracts, and biography.
http://www.primalp.ethz.ch/
Our Mission Polyproject PRIMALP — Sustainable Primary Production in the Alpine Region The quickly changing ecological, economic, social, and political environments confront society and science with new challenges to solve existing and newly emerging conflicts which impede both a sustainable land use, and sustainable agriculture and forestry in the Alpine region. A broad interdisciplinary co-operation is required to develop improved technical, organizational and political concepts and solutions for sustainable future primary production. These principles are pursued within the scope of the Polyproject 'PRIMALP — Sustainable Primary Production in the Alpine Region'. The project has two main objectives:
  • Identification and development of sustainable agricultural and forestry production systems for the Alpine region ('best practices' projects); Development of tools and models for the analysis and evaluation of infrastructure requirements and policy decision-making ('best policies' projects).
Specific research topics are dealt with as individual projects . The results of the individual projects are integrated into a ' Core Project '. Within the scope of the Core Project, an ecological-economic model is built. It serves as a tool for the evaluation of alternative production systems and as a means for the development and communication of consistent concepts for a resource-efficient and sustainable agriculture and forestry in mountain regions.
