An Integrated Approach towards Trade, Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development.
By
Salvano Briceno
Many developing countries are endowed with highly rich and diverse biological resources. These resources provide a wide range of products and services, such as watershed protection, carbon sequestration, eco-tourism, products derived from bioprospecting, intermediate products (e. g. natural dyes, colorants, oils, biochemical compounds, medicinal extracts) and final products (e. g. timber, handicrafts, nuts, fruits, perfumes, medicines). Many products are collected for subsistence use. Some products have served as an important source of innovation for the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, cosmetic or agrochemical industries. Countries rich in natural resources and biodiversity are witnessing high deforestation rates and loss of biodiversity. Impoverished populations searching for short-term economic gain tends to cause environmentally harmful behavior. Well-known examples of such behavior are unsustainable slash-and-burn practices, excessive commercial logging, and clearing of natural habitats for agriculture and urban expansion. To reverse the above process, biodiversity should be used sustainably in development practices. Potential economic value for biodiversity should translate into economic benefits. One way to achieve this is by taking advantage of the new investment and trade opportunities emerging for biodiversity-based products and services. Interest for these products is on the rise because of the industry search for recyclable products, the globally emerging biotechnology industry, and shifts in consumer behavior in industrialized countries and urban areas of developing countries.

Our Goal
To conserve native forest biodiversity in the Northern Forest/Acadian Forest region.
How do we work?
We conduct research that provides information to forest stakeholders and decision makers. Through our dialogue with diverse stakeholders, we design and carry out research that most efficiently delivers new information to them.
Who are our partners?
We work with forest landowners and managers, environmental groups, state and federal agencies, small woodlot owners, sportsmen, loggers, and others with an interest in forest health.
Where are we based?
Manomet’s Forest Conservation Program is based in Brunswick, Maine, about 30 minutes north of Portland.
Where do we work?
Most of our research is conducted in northern and interior Maine. We conduct research on industry land, private conservation land, and public land.
Current Projects Through our Shifting Mosaic Project, a landscape-level approach to biodiversity conservation on industrial forestland, our research is presently focused on riparian buffers, old-growth retention, evaluating biodiversity indicators of sustainable forestry, developing an index of late-successional ecological value, and communicating science through Forest Ecosystem Information Exchange, Mosaic Science Notes, lectures, workshops, and field trips. The Sustainable Forestry Community Web Ring
Welcome to the Sustainable Forestry Community Web Ring home page, a service of the Harwood Foundation for Sustainable Forestry. The goal of this ring is to bring all the actors in sustainable forestry scattered throughout the globe together under one umbrella. The goal will be met if the ring permits sustainable forestry adherents to become aware of all the players involved in this endeavor, to keep abreast of who is doing what, to promote the expansion of sustainable forestry practices, and to encourage information exchange among them. The Web Ring Control Panel, shown below, is located on the home page of every organization in the Sustainable Forestry Community Web Ring. The panel allows users to navigate easily between Web sites that are directly involved in promoting sustainable forestry. You can move through web ring pages sequentially, or view lists of pages using the 'Next Five,' 'Previous Five,' 'Random,' and 'Index' buttons. By following the links through the web ring, you will find information from around the world on organizations actively involved with sustainable forestry policies, practices, and products as defined by the Forest Stewardship Council. WHO WE ARE OUR MISSION WHERE WE WORK CONTACT US ... EARTHDAY
Forests are a Precious Resources We all use paper and timber products in our daily lives and our needs for these resources are growing at alarming rates. Worldwide demand for paper - the single largest use of wood fibre - has increased fivefold since the 1950s, and it is expected to double again over the next 50 years. WWF-Guianas recently financed a training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the Ministry of Natural Resources in Suriname to help local government inventory the country's forest ecosystems. Even worse, much of this use comes from consumption patterns that are unsustainable and do not take into account environmental, ecological and social consequences. So how do we balance this growing need for timber and paper and protect the planet from excessive exploitation? The answer to this question is forest certification. What is Forest Certification?
