The Trust views sustainable forestry as a fragile calculus between the natural systems of the Earth's ecology and those of the human economy. The central problem of sustainable forestry is to maintain the natural composition, structure and processes of forest ecosystems in the presence of human and natural disturbance. The Trust's programs deal with both the biological side of this problem and with the economic and social issues, since neither side can be approached in isolation.
