Kohtla-Järve, city in northeastern Estonia, capital of Ida-Viru District, located near the Gulf of Finland. Kohtla-Järve is a center for the mining and processing of oil shale, which is used to produce oil, gas, and electricity. The city also manufactures fertilizers, construction materials, furniture, and food products. A railway and highway run through Kohtla-Järve between Estonia's capital of Tallinn and Saint Petersburg. The area now occupied by Kohtla-Järve belonged to Russia until 1918, then to Estonia. During World War II (1939-1945) it was occupied first by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), then by Germany, and again by the USSR. From 1944 until Estonia's independence in 1991 Kohtla-Järve was part of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic of the USSR. In 1947 several towns and villages were united to form Kohtla-Järve. The majority of its residents are Russian-speaking immigrants from the former USSR who came to the city for industrial employment. Industrial emissions have severely polluted Kohtla-Järve. Population (1997 estimate) 53,485.

          COURSE GOALS
In the past 15 years, no part of the world map has changed more than the region of
Eurasia formerly covered by the Soviet Union and its allies. The course will offer
an overview of geographical, or "place-based," studies of the former "Socialist"
Bloc (once dominated by the USSR), including natural and human resources,
ethnic and religious divisions, environmental questions, and economic
and political organization. The course will not simply cover present-day
Russia and Eastern Europe (or more properly, East-Central Europe).
The course will cover the 15 former republics of the Soviet Union,
the former members of the Warsaw Pact and the former Yugoslav Federation
(see list below ). Each student will closely examine one of these countries
(or internal regions) as a "case study" for in-depth geographical analysis

    General Requirements
... Introduction Graduate work leading to the master of arts (M.A.), master of science (M.S.) and the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees is offered. A special option in the master's program emphasizing geography and education is available for students with public school teaching licensure. The department's graduate programs emphasize human geography, physical geography with an emphasis on environmental change and Quaternary studies. The master's program may be a more generalized study of cultural, physical, or environmental geography. The Ph.D. program closely follows the research interests of the geography faculty. Because of the small size of the faculty, most students follow an individualized program that includes courses and seminars in related disciplines. Although the department requires knowledge of the fundamentals of geography, it welcomes students whose undergraduate work has been in other disciplines and who can apply their training to geographic problems. Faculty Interests Patrick Bartlein
