Palaeomap Project

Earth maps and research findings for each of earth's geological periods. These maps may answer simple questions such as where was Gondwana or Pangaea, what was earth like in Middle Silurian or when did North and South China come together? It also depicts the supercontinent that may form in the next 250 million years. There are six Java-based animations available for download. By Christopher R. Scotese. 20000221
Category II: sites by county/region Geef mij de ruimte (in Dutch) Campaign to engage the general public in the Netherlands in the physical and environmental planning discussion. With the online survey at this site the the Ministry of Housing, Physcial Planning and the Environment (VROM) wants to generate more input for the Fifth Report of Physical Planning currently in preparation. The survey explicitly addresses environmental and planning conflicts but has some major survey-technical flaws. 20000225 Virtual Guidebooks: panoramas of the western North America [you may have to download the Apple Quicktime plug-in first] Over 800 (eventually over 1400) virtual 360 degree panoramas of the western part of North America, form Alaska to southern Baja California. Panoramas can be rotated by mouse action. The pictures are catagorised geographically as well as by subject and come with very brief information on the location. Unfortunately they lack indication of direction. Subjects are landforms, natural history, archeology, botany and settlements, a.o.. There is also a detailed description of how to make this kind of panoramas yourself. By Don Bain. 20000222

General summary for the countries of the Former Soviet Union
The former Soviet Union (FSU), which covers part of the European and Asian continents, comprises 15 countries. The area extends from the Baltic Sea in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east and from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea in the south. For the purpose of this study, the 15 countries have been grouped in five regions, based primarily on geographic conditions and, as far as possible, on hydro-climatic homogeneity, although the Russian Federation is, due to its size, subject to a wide variation of geographic and hydro-climatic conditions. The regions, listed by size and presented in Figure 3, are here referred to as: Russian Federation, Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Baltic States. This section briefly presents the particularities which can be observed at national and regional level, as well as trends which emerge from the information which was collected. The section is divided into the following sub-sections: Geography, climate and population

  • The Russian Federation (which consists of 21 republics) is by far the largest territorial state in the world. It is the largest republic of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Its area is nearly twice as large as that of Canada.
  • Much of Russia is very cold and/or very dry.
  • Most of the 150 million Russians live in the westernmost part of the country.
  • The major cities, major industrial regions, and most productive agricultural areas of Russia lie west of the Ural Mountains.
  • Despite its size, Russia has only few good ports. Large parts of Russia's territory is 'locked' by land (south and west), or by ice (north; the northern polar region).
  • Russia has an abundance of raw materials. But it does not export many consumer goods to the world market.
