Before the conference ended, however, World War I had started and those present had to return to their respective countries. At a railroad station in Germany, two of the participants, Henry Hodgkin, an English Quaker, and Friedrich Sigmund-Schultze, a German Lutheran, pledged to find a way of working for peace even though their countries were at war. Out of this pledge Christians gathered in Cambridge, England in December 1914 to found the Fellowship of Reconciliation. The US FOR was founded one year later, in 1915.

The Yugoslav idea, the former Yugoslavia and its Social and Geographical Features
Source: The Serbian Questions in The Balkans , University of Belgrade, publisher - Faculty of Geography, Belgrade 1995.
According to D. Obolenski "...the Balkan Peninsula was a land bridge between the Byzantine and Latin cultures." The merging and imbuing properties of the Balkan peninsula and Europe, Asia and Africa are conditioned by the geographical position, the strike of the mountain ranges, the river valleys, the communications, etc. The third one, the isolating and repelling property of the Balkan peninsula is also conditioned by the same factors. By its population, size of the territory, location, ethnic and religious structures, diversity of the economic and social development of its parts the former Yugoslavia used to be the most important state on the Balkan peninsula, in which all geographical and other specific features of the Balkans were interwoven. In spite of these facts the Serbs did not succeed in forming the Serbian national state as they were impeded by the powerful countries such as Austria-Hungary, Great Britain, France, and Germany.

Yugoslav guitar history
16th Century "Beglerbeg" ensamble from Beograd as seen by Salomon Schweigger in 1576. The earliest records of stringed instruments in Dardania (1) (territory of Macedonia and southern parts of Serbia) show that plucked-string instruments have existed in Yugoslavia since pre-Christian time, around 300 years B.C.
The Byzantine chronicler Teofilakt Simokata records the first evidence of the zither, used by the old Slavs who settled in the Balkans, in the seventh century. He reported an incident that occurred when three Slavonic soldiers, armed only with their plucked-string zithers, were captured by the army of the Byzantine emperor Mavrikie.
Nevertheless it would be unjustified to claim, that the Slavs were solely responsible for the development and expansion of the guitar-like instruments on Yugoslav soil. The influence of Antic Greece, and then Romans should also be mentioned. It is hard to believe that, during their rule over the Balkan Peninsula, their most favored instruments the Zither Teutonica and Zither Romana

EXPERIENCES OF THE PARTICIPANTS
The Lecturers/Facilitators
The participants in the course had different educational backgrounds, and there could sometimes also be significant age differences. It should consequently come as no surprise that the appeal of the various lecturers/facilitators varied from person to person. However, most of the participants have been very pleased with the lecturers. And since the course has aspired to presenting the best that Norway has to offer, it has been possible to select scholars with good standing within their particular fields. This was felt to be especially important by participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina because of the local brain drain. When it comes to the content of lectures more directly related to peacebuilding practices, it seems that the benefits experienced by the participants depended a lot on their individual backgrounds. Some had quite extensive experience in human rights theory and practice, while others were introduced to the relevant concepts for the first time. As a consequence, some people felt that they were introduced to more new concepts than they could digest, while others would have liked additional material. This is perhaps
unavoidable in a situation where the participants have different backgrounds, but the problem could to some degree be remedied by the use of diversified reading lists.

Roots of the Balkan troubles:
a history of ethnic skirmishes
More than four years of war have turned once-beautiful Yugoslavia into a living nightmare, and into one of the bloodiest battlefields in Europe's recent history. We see the images refugees bearing children and suitcases, war-wearied elderly women, crying soldiers. But many of us don't understand exactly how the turmoil began. Here's a brief look. The rivalries between Serb, Croat and Muslim communities in Yugoslavia date back centuries. Created in the aftermath of World War I, the country was first known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The name Yugoslavia was adopted in 1929. During World War II, Croats joined the Nazis in exterminating Serbs and others. The Serbs took up arms and hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians were killed on both sides. Josip Broz Tito, a partisan leader, led the resistance against the Nazis, ultimately driving them from Yugoslavia. Following the war, Tito was elected to lead the newly created Yugoslav Federation. Tito ruled with an iron fist, keeping ethnic rivalries in check. Despite such problems as astronomical inflation, the nation held together for a decade after Tito's death in 1980. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, democratic movements swept across much of Eastern Europe, including Yugoslavia. With the election of non-communist governments in four of Yugoslavia's six republics, the Federation began to crumble and ethnic divisions resurfaced.

Sorting Out the Balkans
The Balkan Peninsula is a land of complex ethnic patterns and influences. This wedge-shaped area of land includes Albania, Bulgaria, mainland Greece, and the European section of Turkey, parts of Romania and most of the former Yugoslavia. Collectively, these lands are known as the Balkans. The name "Balkan" means "mountain" in Turkish, and mountain ranges are the major topographical feature of the peninsula. The population of this area is about 65 million. The majority is Slavs, including Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, Bulgars, and Macedonians. The Greeks and Albanians are non-Slavic people. There are three main religions in the Balkans:
Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the predominant religion of the Serbs, Bulgarians, Macedonians and Romanians;

Read about Current Staff PHR has been fortunate in attracting dedicated and talented professionals whose work led to the inception and evolution of the International Forensic Program. While the bulk of our participants are commissioned temporarily for individual assignments, there has been a discreet group of staff that have made the Program what it is today.
Initial forensic projects were carried out by board member and forensic pathologist Robert Kirschner, MD As early as 1987 Dr. Kirschner was investigating police custody deaths in Kenya. In 1988 and 1989 his PHR work included investigations into the treatment of political prisoners in Czechoslovakia, extra-judicial executions of Jesuit priests in El Salvador, student deaths in South Korea, and deaths in custody in South Korea and Israel and the Occupied Territories.

A Peaceful Dream:
a journey back to the Balkans A Project of Crucible of War Productions
With the war
still raging inside of me,
will I be able to
record stories of people
that are so close to me?
Am I different now? In the spring of 1999, Leon Gerskovic like many other Americans was watching TV news reports of thousands of refugees fleeing Kosovo and NATO planes bombing Serbia. Unlike most other Americans, however, Gerskovic knew firsthand what was transpiring. The news reports brought back his own memories of the war in his native Croatia only eight years earlier. As history repeated itself before his eyes, Leon could not be a detached viewer. Instead, he resolved to return to his homeland to see how victims of earlier wars were coping. Every day I want
to have a normal life.
This is led by a desire
that tomorrow will be better. I hope tomorrow will be better. Gerskovic interviewed no politicians, military leaders, journalists, or expert analysts. Instead he spoke to teachers, priests, farmers, veterans, young people, old people, even a garbage man. He sought no villain or victim. Instead of speaking to Serbs, Croats, and Bosnians as identities, he spoke to them as individuals. People don't understand that I knew civilization.
