With each passing year, more people are drawn toward the risk and excitement of conquering nature in their four-wheel drive vehicle. Varnedoe, Jr. Extension Forest Resources The University of Georgia Introduction Although quality timber production may be the main objective for most of our CRP pine lands, many landowners have other objectives in mind. These other objectives often include enhanced wildlife, clean water, intensified forest aesthetics, quality forest recreational activities, and a variety of other purposes. As these CRP stands are beginning to reach pulpwood size, the big question for many innovative forest landowners then becomes: Which of the above activities can I conduct in my planted pine forests as they reach ten plus years old? First, it seems like a good idea that we get some sense of the characteristics of the trees and the environment they are in. On a site with average productivity (site index = 70) these ten year old pine trees will be about 6 inches DBH and forty-one feet tall. Originally planted at 700 trees per acre, they are now down to about 580 trees per acre due to losses of various types. The understory is mostly open and clear of underbrush. There is a layer of pinestraw on the ground and there is some room between the trees allowing you to walk upright in most places without fear of hitting your head on a limb. There are many recreational activities for a landowner in a CRP forest. Think back to the fondest memories of your youth. Perhaps you can conjure up carefree adventures involving a forest setting.

Using an OHV can be an exciting and enjoyable experience on the Pike National Forest In order to use an OHV on National Forest land, it must be equipped with operating brakes, a muffler, and a spark arrestor. Between sunset and sunrise all OHV's must operate a headlight and taillight. Forest roads marked with horizontal numbers indicate roads that are open only to vehicles that have a valid state license plate. Roads that are marked with vertically stacked numbers are generally suited to high-clearance vehicles and/or ATV's. All Forest Service roads and trails that are open to motorized vehicles are signed on the ground with white arrows. Motorized trails are open to motorcycles, dirt bikes, and ATV's less than 48" wide. The South Park District also has two areas with designated motorized trails. These are Hackett Mountain and Four Mile. Please ask at the South Park District Office for more detailed information on these areas.

BLM Idaho Map and Profile Idaho The BLM manages nearly 12 million acres of public land in Idaho. Most of it is located in southern Idaho, extending from the southern tip of Hells Canyon on the Oregon border to the Continental Divide just east of Salmon. The majority of land from the Snake River south toward the Nevada and Oregon borders is managed by the BLM, comprising one of the largest and most remote sections of public land anywhere. In the southcentral part of the State, the BLM manages almost 5 million acres in the Snake River Plain. The BLM also administers scattered holdings in the panhandle country of northern Idaho and in the drainage of the South Fork of the Snake River. The terrain varies, from 10,000-foot mountain peaks along the Continental Divide to rocky, sheer-walled canyons in the southwestern part of the State. The Snake River Plain is mostly flat with gently rolling hills, while conifer forests dominate public land in northern Idaho. BLM-managed lands benefit local Idaho economies in many ways. Recreational activities alone are estimated to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in Idaho each year. A University of Idaho study estimated that recreationists spent at least $22 million in 1995 on guided trips in Idaho, with these expenditures almost equally divided between whitewater trips and hunting experiences. Money spent on recreation is expected to increase as more people discover the recreational opportunities available on Idaho's public lands.
