Ellen Dombrowski Field Exercise #2 This week I was given the opportunity at my placement to teach decimals and percentages to fourth graders. This proved to be a very enlightening experience for me; it opened my eyes to some of the basic challenges that teachers have to face on a daily basis. My co-op, Lisa Fink, told me last week that she would soon be starting a unit on percentages. Yesterday, she began this unit and found out that the kids had little or no exposure to decimals—a fairly fundamental step between fractions and percentages. My job, the next day, was to develop an activity that would help the kids to make that transition between fractions, decimals and percentages.
