Ellen Dombrowski Field Exercise #2 This week I was given the opportunity at my placement to teach decimals and percentages to fourth graders. This proved to be a very enlightening experience for me; it opened my eyes to some of the basic challenges that teachers have to face on a daily basis. My co-op, Lisa Fink, told me last week that she would soon be starting a unit on percentages. Yesterday, she began this unit and found out that the kids had little or no exposure to decimals—a fairly fundamental step between fractions and percentages. My job, the next day, was to develop an activity that would help the kids to make that transition between fractions, decimals and percentages. This was much more difficult than I had originally thought it would be. Fostering Mathematical Power , to see what Dr. Baroody recommended for teaching kids decimals and percentages. It was interesting to see how this textbook was finally connecting to a real teaching experience, and I found the information to be rather helpful. That night as I tried to come up with an effective plan, I realized that there are many different dimensions that are connected to what is seemingly a simple concept to learn.

PRESCRIBED LEARNING OUTCOMES
It is expected that students will apply arithmetic operations on decimal fractions and integers and illustrate their use in solving problems. It is expected that students will:
  • use patterns, manipulatives, and diagrams to demonstrate the concepts of multiplication and division by decimal fractions
  • use estimation strategies to predict or assess the reasonableness of their calculations
  • add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimal fractions (using technology for more than two-digit divisors or multipliers)
  • demonstrate an understanding of the order of operations, using paper and pencil and a calculator
  • add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers concretely, pictorially, and symbolically
It is expected that students will illustrate the use of ratios rates percentages , and decimal numbers in solving problems. It is expected that students will:
  • estimate and calculate percentages
  • distinguish between rate and ratio
  • explain and demonstrate the use of proportion in solving problems
  • mentally convert proper fractions, decimal fractions, and percentages from one to another to facilitate the solution of problems

NUMBER AND NUMBER SENSE
"Workers can't be afraid of numbers!"
GM Parts Plant Manager
Overview
Being able to handle numbers comfortably and competently is important to adults as parents, workers and community members. This competence relies upon having developed a kind of "number sense" about whole numbers, money, fractions, decimals, and percentages. Number sense includes calculation skills with numbers as well as a sense of number and operation and an ability to appropriately use estimation, mental math, computation, calculators or other tools. The learners, teachers and employers that were in the ANPN focus groups had lots of opinions about NUMBER. Learners ranked whole numbers, estimation, and fractions/decimals high as important math topics (3rd, 4th, and 6th); stakeholders concurred, ranking whole numbers fifth and estimation fourth. (Please see the appendices for more information.)
Key Findings
Whole number computational skills are necessary but not sufficient. "If you don't know whole numbers, that is the basis that everything else is built upon... I mean how can you do any other type of thing if you can't do the simple whole number computations? ... Right there you're starting with one foot in the hole... " "I think whole number computation is most important... it's a basic fundamental thing. For example, there is a tree. If the root is weak, the tree's life will not be long. So we have to know whole number computation first, because it's basic, the root of the tree."

Fractions tools:
  • Four tools for working with fractions are already at a stable point. These are:
    • : a tool to help students convert between improper fractions and mixed fractions
    • : a Jeopardy-like game with questions involving pop stars; each question makes the student do some sort of conversion between fractions, decimals and percentages
    • : an online worksheet that includes fraction addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, comparison and finding the least common denominator problem sets.
    • : this tool is the most recent of the four and is Flash-based. It is visually stimulating, has a nice design, and seems to do a good job in teaching concepts.
  • Three additional tools cover related concepts:
    • : looks at the interconnections among the mathematical concepts of fractions, decimals, and percentages
