The Question of Freemasonry
by Harmon R. Taylor
INTRODUCTION
The question of the Christian stand regarding Freemasonry seems to confront our ministry at every turn lately. I have had to come to grips with the sad fact that the esoteric doctrines of Freemasonry separate it, just as unequivocally as do those of Mormonism, from Christian theology. This holds true for every branch of Masonry from the Shriners to the Blue Lodge, the Eastern Star, Demolay, Job's Daughters and the Rainbow Girls! It holds true for the Scottish rite or York rite!

The Impact of Freemasonry
on Elizabethan Literature
The enthusiasm among Renaissance men for classical and Hebrew texts brought in its train a revival, and encouraged a sophisticated and creative apprehension, of numerous mystical, alchemical, hermeticist and occultist tendencies. But it was a revival that inevitably encountered resistance from powerful vested interests, especially in theological circles. Compelled to adopt strategies for survival, seekers after "higher truths" sought immunity from reprisal and persecution in the sub-culture of the occult "underground". Thus the secret society began to proliferate. Early in the 16th century Henry Cornelius Agrippa visited England and his friends among the Oxford Humanists - John Colet and Thomas More in particular. Some academics have deduced from his own words that he formed a society in England at this time ( circa I am led to believe that there still exist "Books of Shadows" (membership books) of witches' covens, for which the earliest entries date back to the 16th century.

    III. Fundamental Principles and Spirit;

    IV. Propagation and Evolution;

    VIII. Action of State and Church.
    I. NAME AND DEFINITION Leaving aside various fanciful derivations we may trace the word mason to the French (Latin matio or machio ), "a builder of walls" or "a stone-cutter" (cf. German Steinmetz , from metzen , "to cut"; and Dutch vrijmetselaar The compound term Freemason occurs first in 1375 according to a recently found writing, even prior to 1155 [1] and, contrary to Gould [2] means primarily a mason of superior skill, though later it also designated one who enjoyed the freedom, or the privilege, of a trade guild . [3] In the former sense it is commonly derived from freestone-mason , a mason hewing or building in free (ornamental) stone in opposition to a rough (stone) mason. [4] This derivation, though harmonizing with the meaning of the term, seemed unsatisfactory to some scholars. Hence Speth proposed to interpret the word freemasons as referring to those masons claiming exemption from the control of local guilds of the towns, where they temporarily settled. [5] In accordance with this suggestion the "New English Dictionary of the Philological Society" (Oxford, 1898) favours the interpretation of

    MASONIC BIOGRAPHIES FRINGE FREEMASONRY FAMOUS FREEMASONS Esoteric Freemasonry Fringe Masonry existed. By examining it in a rational manner and in the context of its time we can defuse it and render it worthless as a weapon of attack on mainstream Freemasonry. John Hamill. Transactions of Quatuor Coronati Lodge . Vol. 109. p. 214. Fringe Masonry encompasses those regular freemasons whose interest in mysticism and the occult led them to such organizations as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn (HOGD) and the Ordo Templi Orientis . Neither of these organizations was ever recognized by any regular masonic body. The Golden Dawn had no masonic pretensions but the fact that the founders of the OTO made such claims opened it to accusations of being clandestine or irregular Freemasonry. Since 1919 ( Equinox Vol. III, No. 1) they ceased to claim being or having any authority regarding Freemasonry. Currently most masonic Grand Lodge jurisdictions are unaware of, or indifferent to, the existence or history of the OTO. It must be stressed that although Freemasonry recognizes many of these men as freemasons

    American CoMasonry is an ancient ritualistic fraternity which groups under its banner men and women, of every race, nationality, and religion.
    http://www.co-masonry.org/
    Freemasonry is an ancient fraternity which groups under its banners men of every race, of every nationality and of every religion. Wishing to do away with all cause for division and strife, Freemasons continually seek the means which will help all human beings to unite and become as one in the cause of the good of the whole. Masonic orders are divided into several rites which, though they may differ, spring from the same goal. That common goal is the reunion of Man with his Divine Source. American Co-Masonry is a Masonic order which works the Scottish Rite from the 1st through the 33rd Degree plus some Degrees of the York Rite. That which distinguishes the American Co-Masonic Order from other masonic workings is that, instead of admitting only men to its ranks, it admits women on an equal footing. It is sovereign and does not depend upon any foreign ruler ship or control. American Co-Masonry proclaims equal rights for both sexes and absolute freedom in the search for truth; the utmost tolerance is required of all members. It is organized as an unincorporated Fraternity. Its business affairs are handle by "The American Federation of Human Rights, Inc.", which is a Colorado non-profit corporation, with headquarters in Larkspur, Colorado.

    A secret fraternal order of Free and Accepted Masons, spread by the British Empire, with actually 5 million members; 3 million in the USA, with 250,00 on the black "Prince Hall" Masonry (rejected by many white lodges). Some Masons define it as "a beautiful system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols" ... also as "the realization of God by the practice of Brotherhood" : To reach God by doing good works to your neighbor... ... It has been described as "the biggest, richest, most secret and most powerful private force in the world". .. and certainly, "the most deceptive" , both for the general public, and for the first 3 degrees of "initiates": Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason (the basic "Blue Lodge")... These Initiates are purposely deceived!, in believing they know every thing, while they don't know anything about the true Masonry... in the words of Albert Pike, whose book "Morals and Dogma" is the standard monitor of Masonry, and copies are often presented to the members, "the first three degrees are but the outer court of the Temple. Part of the symbols are displayed there to the Initiate, but he is intentionally mislead by false interpretations. It is not intended that he shall understand them; but it is intended that he shall imagine he understand them... it is well enough for the mass of those called Masons to imagine that all is contained in the Blue Degrees" ("Morals and Dogma", p.819).

    Mill Valley Masonic Lodge
    Mill Valley Lodge No. 356 has a unique connection with the most famous ship to have sailed in the Revenue Cutter Service, the forerunner of the modern Coast Guard, the Revenue Cutter Bear.
    USS Bear The story of the Lodge's tie to the Bear begins twenty-nine years before the Lodge's 1903 institution when, in 1874, the Bear was built as a sealer at Dundee, Scotland. At two hundred feet long, Bear was heavily built, with six inch thick oak planks, reinforced with heavy steel plating that could take it confidently through the ice. She was rigged as a barkentine, and carried a steam engine. From her launch in 1874 until 1884 she made annual trips to the arctic sealing grounds. In 1884, the Bear had just completed an overhaul when the United States government purchased her for use in an arctic rescue expedition. The sturdy Bear was hurriedly sailed to New York where she was outfitted for an arctic rescue mission and commissioned in the US Navy. The USS Bear and another sealer purchased for the mission (USS Thetis) had become the last hope for the ill-fated Greely Expedition, which was trapped at Lady Franklin Bay in Northern Greenland. The expedition, under the command of Lieutenant A. W. Greely, had set up a camp to study the winter conditions of the north in 1881. When relief ships failed to break through the ice to reach them in 1882 and 1883, the survivors gambled that a rescue ship would be coming, broke camp, and started trekking south. From August to October 1883 they moved south, then set up camp for the winter. By springtime the food had run out; they were desperate.
