http://archeonavale.org/polynesie/moorea/moorea_an/project.html
:: The Project :: Moorea 2003 - Tupapaurau Channel The Channel of the Many Ghosts (Tupapaurau) The quick setup of this campaign was triggered by the discovery of many shaped stone objects near the Tupapaurau Channel (The Channel of the Many Ghosts) on Moorea Na Too E Va'u No Aimeho Nui
In response to a request made by Mrs. Louise Peltzer, Minister of Culture, Higher Education and Research in French Polynesia, Mr. Robert Veccella, Head of the GRAN branch in Tahiti , agreed to manage a comprehensive excavation campaign on the site.
The significance of the excavation area is due to its dimensions (250 by 50 meters) and to the number of the objects it holds, which has been estimated to several hundreds.
Those objects have been described in situ by the GRAN Team in Polynesia, and are identified as : anchors, plummet sinkers for fishing lines or nets, adzes, pestles, axle shaped stones, and maybe standing stones and seats which were used in marae (Polynesian places of worship). Some other stone types could possibly be found on the site.

Employment levels in pearl culture in French Polynesia: a correction
Dear Sir, Almost all pearl farms are located in the Tuamotu and Gambier island groups that only had 15,370 inhabitants at the time of the 1996 census. The labour force represents about 42% of this population, i.e. 6427 people, from which must be deducted all those who do not making a living from pearl culture as not all of the islands in these groups are suitable for this industry. It is generally estimated that the number of pearl culture-related jobs is between 3000 and 4000. Your estimate seems to have been extrapolated from a 1989 figure to which you applied the production growth rate, but it seems that increased production was the result of very large pearl farms using increasingly modern methods which make possible scale economies and significant increases in productivity. Family production, which is more job-intensive, accounts for only 10 to 20% of total production. It certainly is true that pearl culture has led to spectacular repopulating of these island groups. Between 1988 and 1996, the population increased 106% on Apataki, 80% on Arutua, 30% on Kaukura, 88% on Fakarava, 191% on Kauhei, 75% in the Gambier Islands, 57% on Makemo, 132% on Ahe, 79% on Manihi, 44% on Makatea, and 46% on Rangiroa. These figures, which are themselves remarkable, demonstrate the benefits of pearl culture for the islands concerned. But they only involve a small part of French Polynesia and I do not believe that indirect jobs are on the scale you suggest as storage and marketing of this lightweight product require a much less elaborate infrastructure and less manpower than is needed for the tuna industry.

The People

The 1988 population census found a total of about 190,000 people in French Polynesia. However the criteria used for defining the racial groups can only approximate a breakdown of: 70% Polynesian, 12% European, 10% Polynesian/European, five per-cent Chinese, and three percent Polynesian/Chinese. All are French citizens. The 1988 population figures for the five administrative subdivisions are Windward Islands 140,341, Leeward Islands 22,232, Austral Islands 6,500, Tuamotu/Gambier Islands 12,374, Marquesas Islands 7,358. About 70% of the total population lives on Tahiti. The indigenous people of Tahiti-Polynesia are the maohi or Eastern Polynesians (as opposed to the Western Polynesians in Samoa and Tonga). Racial intermariages are commun and many Tahitians can claim French, Chinese, American and Polynesian ancestry. This accounts for the physical beauty of the inhabitants and the total abscence of racial prejudice, either from the Europeans or the Tahitians. Education
Formal education is mandatory in Tahiti for every child to the age of 14. Primary education begins at age five, and continues to the age of 12, when children begin secondary education.

Just how the Polynesian peoples came to populate their islands of the Pacific is a subject of some debate. What is clear, however, is that they were great sailors and navigators who traversed vast distances of open ocean to settle as far and wide as present-day French Polynesia, Hawaii, New Zealand, parts of the New Guinea island, Tonga and the Cook Islands. It's thought that they left South-East Asia around 3000 or 4000 years ago and began to arrive in present-day French Polynesia around 300 AD. Islands were originally ruled by chieftains who commanded huge fleets of outrigger canoes; religious practices at this time included human sacrifices. Some of the first European visitors, which included Samuel Wallis (1767), Louis-Antoine de Bougainville (1768) and James Cook (1769), returned with stories of a paradise on earth inhabited by 'noble savages' and Venus-like women whose sexual favours were freely offered to the visitors. Europe was abuzz with stories of a tropical haven of free love when Bougainville returned to Paris and this myth attracted the likes of Herman Melville, Robert Louis Stevenson and Paul Gauguin. But the most famous event in the region's recent history was the mutiny on the Bounty . It was on Tahiti and the Austral island of Tubuai that Fletcher Christen and his mutineers sought refuge after setting William Bligh and his faithful crew members adrift in a tiny open boat near the Tongan islands on 28 April 1789. And, ultimately, it was on Tahiti that the long arm of British law rounded up those mutineers who hadn't escaped to Pitcairn Island, and made them face British justice.
