Importance and Scope of Horticulture
India with diverse soil and climate comprising several agro-ecological regions provides ample opportunity to grow a variety of horticulture crops. These crops form a significant part of total agricultural produce in the country comprising of fruits, vegetables, root and tuber crops, flowers, ornamental plants, medicinal and aromatic plants, spices, condiments, plantation crops and mushrooms. It is estimated that all the horticulture crops put together cover nearly 11-6 million hectares area with an annual production of 91 million tonnes. Though these crops occupy hardly 7% of the cropped area they contribute over 18% to the gross agricultural output in the country. Fruits and vegetables are not only used for domestic consumption and processing into various products (Pickles, preserves sauces, jam, jelly sques, etc.) but also substantial quantities are exported in fresh and processed form, bringing much-needed foreign exchange for the country. These groups of crops also provide ample scope for achieving bio-diversity and diversification to maintain ecological balance and to create sustainable agriculture and can make an impact on the national economy in the years to come. India with more than 28.2 million tonnes of fruits and 66 million tonnes of vegetables is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world next only to Brazil and China. However, per capita consumption of fruits and vegetables in India is only around 46kg and 130g against a minimum of about 92g and 300g respectively recommended by Indian Council of Medical Research and National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad. With the present level of population, the annual requirement of fruits and vegetables will be of the order of 32.58million tonnes and 83million tonnes respectively. To meet this requirement the National Commission on Agriculture has projected an area of 4m.ha. and 8m.ha. under fruits and vegetable crops respectively by 2000A.D.

    http://aspartamekills.com/msgoncrops.html
GO TO PRESS RELEASE NOW, THEY ARE SPRAYING CROPS WITH MSG A product containing a substantial amount of processed free glutamic acid (MSG) has been approved for use as a "growth enhancer" spray for use on agricultural products. Approximately 30 per cent of the product is MSG. The action is summarized in the press release that follows. MSG is known to trigger migraine headache, tachycardia, arrhythmia, seizures, asthma, nausea and vomiting, hives, skin rash, anxiety attacks, depression and much, much more in people who have become sensitive to it. It causes gross obesity and learning disorders in laboratory animals that ingest it when young. You can read about what it is, what it does, and where it's hidden in food on our Web site: http://www.truthinlabeling.org . But now that spraying MSG ON agricultural products as they grow has been approved, ANY fresh food may have some residual MSG on it, and processed food made from fresh fruit or vegetables may have MSG in it, too. Baby food, largely free of MSG since the late 1970's, will now have MSG in it. Processed food will now have more MSG in it than it did before. And there may be MSG residue on every tomato, cucumber, strawberry, leaf of lettuce, or peanut that you eat, as well as on every other fresh fruit, grain or vegetable. We think you should be concerned. This is a new EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) approval, effective February 6, 1998. We are asking that the approval be rescinded. Being told by the EPA that it is OUR responsibility to demonstrate that residue from spraying MSG on produce while it's growing is a potential health hazard, and interpreting that to mean that the EPA will not look into the matter without extreme pressure, we have provided them more than sufficient material to demonstrate the MSG places humans at risk. We have also written to the producer, Auxein Corporation, informing them that their product is potentially toxic, and asking them to withdraw it from the market.

    Produce - The Safe Way
    Root Crops
Health researchers have determined that increased consumption of fruits and vegetables leads to reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. Nutritionists at the National Cancer Institute and other health professionals recommend eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Root crops are relatively low in calories and provide a good source of fiber. They are rich in vitamins and minerals. When selecting root crops, look for vegetables that are well formed, have a smooth texture, and are blemish-free. Avoid crops that are wilted, have wrinkled or shriveled skin, have soft, dark areas, or are bruised and appear unripe.
    Food Safety Tip
Listeria and E. coli bacteria are found in soil and water and can be carried by animals. Root crops can become contaminated from the soil or from manure used as fertilizer. Scrub root crops with a small vegetable brush and plenty of water to remove dirt. Be sure to rinse vegetables thoroughly in clean water. This will help decrease the amount of bacteria on the vegetables. If you are planning on peeling the vegetable, be sure to wash root first so as not to contaminate the flesh with any bacteria that might be on the surface.
    Storage
    • Store potatoes, sweet potatoes, and onions in a cool, dry, dark place. They can keep for up to two months.

Specialty Crops Vermont is the nation’s largest producer of maple syrup and a major northeast producer of apples, potatoes, eggs, honey, vegetables, Christmas trees, and greenhouse nursery products NEW! Value Added Market Development Grants Knowing the importance of enabling producers to capture more of the value of their commodities, the farm bill significantly increases this program to $40 million per fiscal year through 2007 ($240 million total). This will increase participation in the program by allowing broader standards of eligibility so agricultural producer groups and business ventures largely owned by producers can compete for grants designed to develop value-added products or markets. The provision also encourages grants to be used to assist in the development of agricultural-based renewable energy sources. NEW! Apples Provides an additional $94 million in national assistance for apple producers who have suffered low market prices. NEW! Honey To aid honey producers and provide them with a safety net in times of poor market conditions, the new farm bill creates a marketing assistance loan program similar to that of other program commodities. The new program provides producers with price support loans or loan deficiency payments with a loan rate of $0.60 per pound.
