How to Dig Razor Clams

Steelheader.net
It’s that time of year again, when daylight creeps further into the evenings and many wellied Orcadians (some of them wearing rubber boots) head for the spring ebbs to gather those most elusive members of the shellfish family – spoots (razor clams). Yes, catching hold of spoots can be a tricky business and I am certainly no expert. Some people lure them to the surface by sprinkling salt into the holes they leave in the sand. Alan Bichan, The Orcadian The razor clam (Siliqua patula) is an important bivalve mollusk harvested extensively throughout its range by commercial and sport fisheries. Its scientific name is derived from the Latin: siliqua means pod, and patula means open; thus, “resembling an open pod.” Alaska Department of Fisheries and Game

Compatibility Chart for Fruits and Vegetables in Short-term Transport or Storage Jim Thompson, Adel Kader, and Kathi Sylva University of California, Davis University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources Publication 21560 The best storage environment for an individual fruit or vegetable depends on its unique requirements for temperature, relative humidity, and ethylene exposure. Most compatibility charts for mixing products during postharvest handling divide fruits and vegetables into eight groups. In practice it is very difficult to separate products into this many groups-very few wholesale or retail handling facilities, if any, have eight temperature-controlled rooms. We have developed a three-group chart that is easier to use and still provides good product life (see the front of the poster**):

An IPM Label on Supermarket Vegetables:
A First for the Nation
A partnership among growers, Wegmans Food Markets, Comstock Michigan Fruit, and Cornell has spawned the first IPM-labeled canned and frozen vegetables in the nation. Been to Wegmans lately? Checked out their canned vegetable shelves since mid-November? If not, you're in for a surprise. Wegmans is now selling canned peas and corn under IPM labels. Look for a blue ribbon with the acronym "IPM" and a map of New York centered in it. The backs of the labels explain that "Through IPM, growers use less pesticide over time by taking other steps to reduce pest damage. Your purchase supports the efforts of growers who truly care about the environment." "IPM" (integrated pest management) is a multifaceted approach to the problems growers face due to insects, diseases, weeds, and other agricultural pests. It focuses on alternatives to chemical pesticides, such as prevention and monitoring, biological controls, and pest-resistant plant varieties. The New York State IPM Program-created in 1985 as a partnership program of the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, Cornell University, and Cornell Cooperative Extension-works with producers of 25 major crops in every county in New York to reduce their reliance on pesticides while maintaining high-quality, affordable products.

Transaction Costs in Mexican Fruit
and Vegetable Contracting:
Implications for Asociación en Participación
Paper presented at the XVIII International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association, Atlanta, 10-12 March 1994. An earlier draft was prepared for the conference on The Transformations of Mexican Agriculture, Berkeley, 3-4 December 1992. David Runsten
Introduction
Working Paper No. 2, December 1992 and March 1994 Print this page This paper focuses on fruits and vegetables. This is not the sector where asociaciones en participacion in Mexico are most prevalent (they are mostly in poultry and livestock), but it is a sector that can be highly profitable and where Mexico has great potential. It is also one of the more labor intensive sectors in agriculture, and ejidos are certainly repositories of labor. If we can discover what the obstacles are to successful associations between ejidatarios and private capital, it may be possible to broaden the reach of the benefits of such production, creating a more diversified farm structure in fruit and vegetable production, with less reliance on armies of migrant workers. When I first went to Mexico in 1980 to look at fruit and vegetable production, I went looking for the subordination of the peasantry to large investors described by Ernest Feder and others. The reality, however, was that the peasantry was largely marginal to export fruit and vegetable production, and often shut out of or discriminated against in domestic supply systems as well (so-called mercados controlados). It was not so much that they were being exploited, but that they were excluded from the most profitable activitiesnot so much that they were victims of capital, but that capitalism had not involved them enough.

Alternative Food Crops
BY PLANTS FOR A FUTURE
There are quite literally thousands of species of edible plants that can be grown, yet most people are only aware of the thirty or so species to be found in the grocers, and many of these will have been imported. In this section we will give you a small selection of little known edible plants. They are all fairly easily grown in most soils and often require less attention then many of our better known food crops. All are perennial unless stated otherwise.
Root Crops
Yam Dioscorea batatas
This is a hardy perennial species from China and its root is delicious baked. The only drawback is that it can be 3 foot long in good soils with the thickest part of the root at the bottom - quite a task to harvest, which is probably why it is not commercially cultivated. Propagation is either by replanting the top portion of the root, stem cuttings in late spring or by tubercles - baby tubers that are freely formed in the leaf axil of older plants treated like seed, being sown in pots in the greenhouse, preferably as soon as ripe.

March 1997, Updated August 1998, June 2002 and January 2003
This article originally appeared in the March 1997 issue of the FDA Consumer Magazine and was revised in August 1998 and June 2002. The article is no longer being updated. For current information on this topic, go to the National Institutes of Health's 5-a-Day Website.
Fruits and Vegetables:
Eating Your Way to 5 A Day
by Paula Kurtzweil Are you taking the 5 A Day challenge? You may be if you find yourself:
  • snacking on raw vegetables instead of potato chips
  • adding fruit to your cereal at breakfast
  • using the salad bar when you go out for lunch or to the grocery store
  • loading up on juice instead of a usual coffee, tea or soda.
The challenge, offered by the National Cancer Institutea branch of the National Institutes of Healthis to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, and these are some ways consumers are rising to the occasion. They're taking advantage of the healthful benefits of fruits and vegetables. Studies by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the National Academy of Sciences suggest that the nutritional goodness of fruits and vegetables, with a diet that is low in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol and that contains plenty of whole-grain breads and cereals, may decrease the risk of heart disease and cancer. Fruits' and vegetables' potential to help improve the health of Americans led NCI to begin a multi-year public education campaign in 1992. Its goal is to increase consumers' awareness of the importance of fruits and vegetables and to give consumers ideas on how they can increase their intake. With its partner, the Produce for Better Health (PBH) Foundationa nonprofit consumer education foundation funded by the produce industryNCI has taken the "5 A Day for Better Health" message to grocery stores, classrooms, television, work sites, churches, and elsewhere.
