In spite of this concern and a growing body of evidence that it is justified, many fundamental questions remain unresolved. The Galapagos Islands' simplified ecosystems provide a unique opportunity to research fundamental questions of invasion ecology. A single species, Psidium guajava , has invaded several islands, each to varying degrees over the past hundred years and each of which possesses a characteristic flora and vegetation zonation which further facilitates such a study. For the visitor the Galápagos Islands is an all-year-round destination. The best way to visit these islands is to fly to the Ecuadorian mainland and take the short flight to the Islands. The Galápagos archipelago is a chain of volcanic islands which are moving southeast from a "hot spot" in the Earth's crust. The westernmost islands have active volcanoes but on the eastern ones which are older, the volcanoes have become dormant and begun to erode. There are thirteen large islands and many smaller ones. Colonisation of the islands varies from tough, sparse vegetation to lush forests. The islands are located near the Equator, 1000 km (600 miles) off the west coast of Ecuador. The major influence on the climate is the Humboldt current, which brings cool water laden with plankton past the islands. The rainy season lasts from January to June. The temperature range at this time is 23-30°C (75-85°F). The rain is interspersed with sunny periods and the water temperature is about 23°C (75°F). It is a pleasant time to visit. In the dry season, both the air and water temperatures are a few degrees cooler and a lightweight wetsuit may be needed. All this, of course, is subject to El Niño The Galápagos National Park Service and the Charles Darwin Research Station control the national park that covers 97% of the land and water in the region. The fee of $100.00 USD, which is collected from each tourist, is the major source of income to conserve the area and to eradicate the feral animals. Only five of the islands are inhabited; some islands are open only to scientists, but most can be visited in the company of an accredited naturalist guide. There are two airports, one on Baltra (just north of Santa Cruz) and the other on San Cristóbal. The total population is about 20,000. The main towns are Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal.
