The History of Vaccination
Introduction
The two public health interventions that have had the greatest impact on the world's health clean water and vaccines. Thanks to such pioneers as Jenner and Pasteur, a handful of vaccines prevent illness or death for millions of individuals every year. But there is still a long way to go. Immunization, the most cost-effective public health intervention, continues to be uncer-used.. It is profoundly tragic that almost two million children still die each year from diseases for which are available at low cost . And over 90 000 fall victim to paralytic polio, which could also have been prevented by immunization. Indeed, many years elapsed between the invention of current vaccines and their widespread use in immunization programmes. The reasons for these delays are many and complex. If history is to serve any useful purpose, it should help us to find ways to avoid such delays in future.
The invention era
The closing years of the 19 th century and the early years of the 20 th century were marked by the achievements of great vaccine scientists such as Pasteur. Since the introduction of

Business and tourism have earned a spot in the museum with numerous exhibits concerning the rise and fall of local business leaders and their visions. Trace the history of popular tourist attractions like Rock City and Ruby Falls.

The Republic of Senegal is the most westerly state of Africa. It covers an area of 196,722 sq. km (75,955sq miles). The May 1988 population census of Senegal stood at 6,896,808 and an estimated 8,152,000 at mid-1993. The southern border of Senegal is first with Guinea-Bissau and then with Guinea on the northern edge of the outcrop of Fouta Djallon. It shares its eastern border with Mali, the northern border with Mauritania and Gambia forms a semi-enclave between part of southern Senegal and the sea. It is bordered on its western side by the Atlantic Ocean.
Pre-colonial history
It is now known that Senegal has been inhabited since Paleolithic and Neolithic period This has been evidenced by the discovery of household implements and tools and stone circles. The West African regions of Senegambia (Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau) and the Western Sudan (Mali, eastern Guinea, etc.) feature a wide variety of 'traditional' social systems and cultures. We find various systems of kinship (patrilineal, matrilineal and mixed forms), of political centralisation (from 'acephalous' to 'state'), different artistic expressions, ecological habitats, agricultural and economic specialisation, etc. Both regions are also endowed with comparatively abundant historical sources (medieval Arab geographers, Portuguese navigators of the fifteenth century, European and Cape-Verdian traders, etc.). These afford us with a considerable time-depth of textual documentation.
All of these features render the region an ideal location for social/cultural-anthropological studies, both synchronic and diachronic, as well as for historical studies. An even greater time-depth is attained by archaeology, for which the region also offers great prospects. Quite some research has already been carried out in and near the flood plains of the rivers

Gambia: History
The Gambia gained its independence from the UK in 1965; it formed a short-lived federation of Senegambia with Senegal between 1982 and 1989. In 1991 the two nations signed a friendship and cooperation treaty. A military coup in 1994 overthrew the president and banned political activity, but a new 1996 constitution and presidential elections, followed by parliamentary balloting in 1997, have completed a nominal return to civilian rule. The Gambia recently emerged from its isolation to accept a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council during 1998-99.

Organization - Who We Are, What We Do
Purpose Accomplishments Board of Directors • Purpose "Around the world, wherever human rights are violated, women and girls suffer the most." - Margaret A. Schuler, President, WLDI In both industrialized and developing countries, women are more likely than men to live in poverty, endure low status within the family, be refugees, migrate in search of work, suffer from poor health and nutrition and be solely responsible for the maintenance and care of children. Even worse, women and girls are increasingly victims of state-sponsored or condoned violence and repression. Female infanticide, honor killings, acid attacks, female genital mutilation, widow abuse, sexual slavery and child marriage are still practiced in too many parts of the world. And mass rape has become a common terror tactic in ethnic cleansing campaigns. In many nations, the legal systems perpetuate sex bias. Often laws and customs openly discriminate against women. Women are routinely denied their most basic economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights. Unfortunately, women who are the subject of violence and discrimination often have no idea what rights they have, or they don't know any effective methods to enforce those rights. In short, they lack the knowledge or the skills to advocate for themselves.
