This is your journey into cyberspace gem magic. Gemology is the study of the history of mineral or organic substances known as gems It has been said that each of us has deep within the knowledge of all things. And when we ready ourselves to remember this, then the knowledge is there to be known. This wisdom is from the Dead Sea Scrolls . In ancient times forgotten, man's very existence was governed by magic. He believed that tools of the earth could attract the appropriate powers to create the desired effect. He believed, and that was the magic. Positive energy creates our very dreams. You once visualized the very thing you have recently acquired, that was magic. Add the earth elements to your visualization and believe in your dreams because... all things are possible.

Stepping stones to riches
Isidore Domnick Mendis Shakespeare's famous quote, ``All that glitters is not gold'' should have had a postscript: ``And all those glittering stones are not diamonds either.'' For aeons, unscrupulous dealers thrived simply because there was no fool-proof method of evaluating a gemstone's worth. Also, the evaluators were in small numbers and the methods used were hopelessly outdated. Today, the outlook is brighter, thanks to newer technologies. In India, professional gemmology institutes have come up in many places which both evaluate gemstones and impart scientific training in the art. These institutes are proving to be a boon to buyers of precious stones. Take the case of Shailender Singh, a prosperous car dealer in South Delhi who bought a diamond ring for his daughter's wedding for Rs. 75,000. Two years later, when he heard about the Indian Institute of Gemology, he brought the ring for evaluation. Within an hour his worst fears were confirmed. His purchase was merely a cheap substitute for diamond the synthetic cubic zirconia commonly known as American diamond which few can tell from the real. Shailender's is not a solitary example; over the years, thousands of people have been swindled. Few jewellers ever share their knowledge in gem identification and thrive on people's ignorance.

Do you wonder about how to tell one gem from another?
How gems are valued?
What makes emeralds and rubies so valuable?
Would you like to learn how to cut gems, or make jewelry?
If you are already a gem cutter or metal smith, would you like to advance your skills?
If so, the IGS was created for YOU!
Dear Gem Lover,
We have put together a package of educational resources, information and services that are designed to meet your needs.
The focus of the IGS is, of course, gemstones. However, we recognize that there are many kinds of gemologists at many stages of learning. Here are the highlights of what is being covered. GEMOLOGY Gemology is the study of gemstones: what constitutes a gem, the terminology of gemstones, their physical and optical properties, and how those properties are used to identify gems.
Learning gemology does not have to cost thousands of dollars. As an IGS member, you are automatically enrolled in our gemology course. The only other charges are for testing. To learn about our Gemology Course

The presence of plastic impregnations may also be detected through the use of infrared spectroscopy. Colored wax and/or plastic impregnations have also been used on such gem materials as marble and soapstone. BLEACHING Whereas the last several treatments covered are intended to add or increase the color of the enhanced material, bleaching is used to lighten or remove color. Most commonly used are chlorine compounds or concentrated hy drogen peroxide. Both natural and cultured pearls are routinely bleached to lighten their color by lightening the dark organic conchiolin layers; similarly, black conchiolin coral may be bleached to resemble the rarer brownish "golden" coral. And dark yellowish brown chatoyant tiger'seye quartz may be made a lighter "honey" color through bleaching. LASER DRILLING REFERENCES AND SUGGESTED READING Kammerling, R. C. and J. I Koivula, 1989a. Wearing lucky stones can bring luck and fortune or even help ease prevailing tensions and problems. One should always choose the lucky stone based on the planetary positions in the individual's horoscope. Gems generate positive vibrations in the body. This helps counter the negative malefic powers released by the planets. When a specific gem is worn, it emits positive energy and provides a protective atmosphere.

http://www.lucentdiamonds.com/Outer Limits of Gemology, JCK, 6-99.htm
THE OUTER LIMITS OF GEMOLOGY Excerpts from: JCK, June 1999 by Rob Bates Colorless gem-quality stones, but no one seems to have done it on a large scale. "It's hard to produce a high-quality synthetic diamond,' notes Shigley. "They tend to be more included and fractured." In fact, some think mass-producing near-colorless gem-quality stones is impossible. Even Grizenko, who is producing blue, red, and pink syntheticsand sell- them at "a fraction" of the cost of naturals does not think it's possible to mass-produce near-colorless synthetics economically'. "It's hard to grow a good white, because you have to carefully control for things like nitrogen," he observes. For now, there are only fancy colored synthetics on the market, and a pretty limited number at that. The industry doesn't seem worried about s ynthetic fancy-colored stones, since most colored diamonds are sent to labs anyway to document origin of color. But near-colorless synthetics are. another matter. Even though diamond dealers don't think gem-quality near-colorless synthetics will hurt the market for naturals-just as the market for emeralds, rubies, and other colored gems hasn't been damaged by syntheticsdetection could be a big problem. Like synthetic moissanite, synthetic stones fool a thermal tester into reading "diamond" because that's technically what they are. But visual detection of synthetic diamonds, unlike moissanite, isn't easy. "It's a little harder to detect," Shigley says. "To me the features seem fairly distinctive, but I'm a little biased because I've seen a number of samples." (For a list of the identifying characteristics of synthetics, see "How to Detect Synthetics," p. 127.) All this has led industry leaders to call for a synthetic-sniffing "black box" along the lines of a thermal tester or the new moissanite detectors.

An Introduction to Gemology covers basic subjects of interest to the general public. These are non-technical articles designed to open the doors to a complex subject.
Advanced Gemology explains the technical terms used to define gems and introduces the more complex subjects.
Practical Gemology goes one step further, explaining how to use the tools of gemology and what to do with the information they supply. This is the essence of gem identification. (See "Tools of the Gemologist" for a list of necessary instruments.) There is also a special section on gemstone grading. This information can be found in our Reference Library.

Judge orders refund in sale of treated beryls
A verdict has been reached in one of the world's first court cases regarding the sale of treated gemstones. The case involved a Singapore jeweler and gem stone dealer, House of Hung, who, in 1988, sold 39 Maxixe-type blue beryls to a dealer from Abu Dhabi, Darwish M.F.K. Al Gobaishi, without informing him that the beryls were irradiated and the color would fade. Dr Gobaishi tried to return the beryls after laboratory fade tests showed that the color was not stable but House of Hung refused to refund the money paid for the 39 beryls, claiming that the invoice described the beryls as "Maxixe," that the invoice said that goods sold are not returnable, and that the beryls did not fade as fast as claimed, producing expert Kurt Nassau, who testified that sometimes Maxixe-type beryls retained their color for long periods of time. The Singapore judge in the case, Judge G. P. Selvam, ordered House of Hung to refund the purchase price of the 39 stones in exchange for the return of the stones in his ruling on the case, dated March 31,1995. The case does not address the issue of whether or not jewelers or dealers have an obligation to inform customers about routine gemstone enhancements. The gemstones in the case

The optical characteristics and properties of gemstones often provide the fastest and best methods of identification. A certain amount of theory is necessary as optical principles determine cutting methods, gemstone attributes and the function of gem testing instruments. Light
Light and our perception of it play a crucial role in our appreciation of and identification of gemstones. Visible light however comprises only a small part of what is referred to as the electromagnetic spectrum A rough wavelength scale follows:
Note what a small portion of the spectrum comprises visible light. Light can be thought of as progressing outward in a single path (a ray). The ray forms a wave vibrating in all planes at right angles to the direction of travel, the line of the ray. White light is composed of a mixture of a great many wavelengths each of which is perceived as a different colour. The wavelength of violet light for example is about half that of red light. The wavelengths of white light may be divided into:
