http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~sroots/cwgene.htm
This page is designed to assist in the research of genealogy information about ancestors serving in the Civil War. When I started my research, all I knew was that my great-grandfather had served four years and had been wounded twice. This came from oral stories pasted down from other relatives. In just under 90 days, using the Internet, a visit to the Arkansas Historical Commission, and letters to the historical archives of other states, I had uncovered 13 ancestors who had fought in the Civil War. I have unit histories, individual service records, and pension records of many. Provided here are some of the links and connections that assisted me in that search. Visit my Civil War Ancestors page to view the fruits of that labor.
Beginning Your Research If pension records do not exist for your ancestor (Union or Confederate), you can write to the National Archives for the military record of the soldier in question. However, you should be aware that these records aren't as useful, and are subject to the same process as described earlier for requesting pension records.
Getting Started
To assist in getting started it is helpful to know the state and unit in which your ancestor served. There are numerous ways to assist you in finding this out. They include:

Within the indexed images of six books, you'll find reference to approximately 217,000 individuals. Among the books selected for inclusion in this collection, you'll find biographies and genealogies for thousands of individuals who fled to Connecticut following the Battle of Long Island in 1776 and an index to claims filed by New York residents who served in the War of 1812. In addition, you'll find a comprehensive report by the State Historian that identifies every person listed on muster rolls between 1664 and 1775. This list is especially useful because nearly all of the original muster rolls for colonial wars were destroyed in a 1911 fire at the state library.

How to Locate your Civil War Ancestor
And Send Away for his Military Records
If you are tying to discover if your ancestor served in the Civil War:
    Off-line Help
    • Locate your ancestor's obituary. Very often, a veteran's service record is listed. Write or call the local library where your ancestor died. Many libraries will do look-ups but you have to know an approximate death date.
    • Check the newspaper of his locality during the war. Sometimes during the War, there were articles about the local men and their units
    • Locate his tombstone. Again, many times a veteran's regiment is written on his tombstone.
    • Ask the Historical Society located in your ancestor's county.
    • There is also a good source at the Library of Congress: 'The Index of Old Wars Pension File - 1815 - 1926, CS 68.W 477 1993'. The index covers the Civil War, Mexican War and World War I. Some large Public Libraries have this index.
    • Check the 1890 Special Census for Civil War Veterans and Widows of Veterans which is available on microfilm in Family History Centers and larger libraries.
