Genealogy - Military Resources
Using Veterans' Organizations Trying to find information about the military unit or organization your ancestor or loved one was in? You know he was in the Navy in the Korean War, but would like to find out more? You have military records that state your grandfather was in the 396th RCT in Italy during World War II, but don't know what that means? To answer questions such as these, try locating former members of those units and ask them questions. Go to Online Military Resources to find links to specific periods or conflicts (e.g., World War II or Vietnam). Go here for tips on how to locate a living former service member. In addition, however, there is a growing online presence of organizations for former members of specific military units. Typically, they have newsletters, membership rosters, reunion information, and other services useful to family history researchers for contacting members who might have known or been in the same outfit as your ancestor or loved one. At the very least, members of these organizations can help you translate military jargon and other obscure terms typically found on discharge papers and other official records. These groups are listed below by branch of service.
