Question: I have been searching for 10 years for the parents of my gg grandmother, Eliza Ann Hale Chandler, born in 1820 in PA. Since there are no birth records that far back, and the census only says she was born in PA, how do I find her parents. She died in Ohio and there are no records of death certificate or newspaper clippings. She is supposed to be related to Nathan Hale. I have looked everywhere including a local Mormon Library.
GENEALOGY LADY: Extract all the Hale families from the 1820 Pennsylvania census. Extract all the Hale families from the 1830, 1840 and 1850 census. Ask yourself what counties do the Hale families reside in. What families has a female in 1830 that is 9-11 years old. The families that have the female child, you must research those to see if the head of household has a probate/will record that lists Eliza Chandler as a heir. This would be your first task. Also, write to the Hale/Hail Families of the 19th Century Tennessee, 501 N. Smith Street, Vinita, OK 74301 (they may not be the correct family but they may be able to connect you to other researcher of the Nathan Hale family that they may have corresponded with). After you have done these things, email me again with your info and I will be able to help you further.

Available Research Resources Submitted by Host GFS DarlaJo Available Research Resources - a summary of the GENTREK Birth presentations from Feb. 2001 HostGFSDarlaJo Federal Census Records The US Federal Census has been taken every 10 years since 1790, only the 1890 census has been lost in all these years. The earlier the census, the less info you will find for each household. Also look for "local" listings of inhabitants. Some towns / counties periodically listed everyone residing in the area for various purposes. These lists were sometimes tax listings, voting lists, church listings, land ownership lists, etc. These records can usually be found at County Court Houses, State Archives, and State Historical Societies. State Census Many states needed or wanted community information more often than the Federal Census. Some states decided to take their own censuses at various times. The counts taken and the surviving records vary a great deal from state to state. Be sure to check the State Archives, Genealogy Societies and Historical Societies for possible records.
