Baltimore, 1820-1850 Passenger and Immigration Lists Yes, times were different back then.... Can you imagine seeing your name in the local paper the morning after you'd checked into a hotel? That would certainly cramp some congressional (and ex-presidential) style, wouldn't it? But this was a common practice, and I've seen such guest lists in newspapers from Dallas to Philadelphia, the Carolinas to California. Hotel guest lists are yet another good reason to not limit your research to strictly the area where your ancestor lived!

    And Ships They Came On:
The information on these pages has been extracted from various government records, as well as the odd shipping record (mostly from the Allan Line). It contains, voyage accounts, emigration information, lists of ships sailing to Canada, information on the ports, and on the people. Many of these lists give the name of the ship, Master, Port of Departure, Port of Arrival and other such information. Some list the organization which sponsored the emigrants. Since passenger lists are rarely available for the early ships which came to Canada there are few of those, but other sources are being sought. The Immigration reports of the government sometimes contain names, but only rarely. Passenger lists for arrivals after 1865 can be obtained on microfilm, and a database of arrivals for is online, from the National Archives of Canada. Post 1935 records are available.

Feedback Once research has reached the point of entry into Canada, ships' passenger lists provide extremely valuable genealogical information such as names of people in the party, ages, sex, occupations, destination and sometimes the origin of the immigrant.
In order to make effective use of these lists it is necessary to know the approximate date of arrival in Canada, otherwise research may prove too time consuming.
Although the keeping of regular passenger lists began in 1855 in Canada, with the passing of the British "Passenger Act", some earlier records are available. An Index Reel C-4252 covers the period 1817-31, but is by no means a complete list and consists only of names drawn from the correspondence of the British Secretary of State.
For the period 1855-65 exact records are very scarce. Probably the best course is to write to the Public Archives of Canada, 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa K1A 0N3, including as much relevant information as possible.

In all, approximately 190,000 individuals are referenced within this unique compilation. The information collected here is especially valuable since nearly all of Ireland's pre-1901 census records were lost in a 1922 fire at the Public Records Office in Dublin. This Family Archive includes extensively researched reconstructions of the 1841 and 1851 censuses as well as transcriptions of the surviving 1851 census fragments for County Cork. In addition, you'll find record of wills that were abstracted or copied before the fire.

Other immigration web sites and databases If you do not know the approximate year when your ancestor arrived in Canada , we suggest you search other records for clues. For example, the 1901 census returns indicate year of arrival for those people who were not born in Canada. If your ancestor homesteaded in the Western provinces, the date on the homestead application may assist you in narrowing the period of arrival. If an ancestor lived in a city, his or her name might be found in the annual city directories, which list the names of adults with their occupations and addresses. For example, if your ancestor's name first appears in the directory in 1910, it is possible that he or she arrived in 1909. City directories can be found in public libraries and also at the National Library of Canada .Another source is provincial death records , which sometimes indicate how many years the deceased had resided in Canada.
