Passenger Lists 1865-1935
Passenger lists constitute the official record of immigration in this period. They contain information such as name, age, country of origin, occupation and intended destination of passengers. The records are arranged by port and date of arrival, with the exception of the years 1923 to 1924, and some of those for 1919 to 1922, when an individual Form 30A was used. Note that passengers from mainland Europe often boarded transatlantic ships at ports in Great Britain. For immigrants from Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe, you may also wish to consult our LI-RA-MA collection
Important note: Due to the heavy volume of inquiries we receive, staff at the National Archives cannot undertake searches in passenger lists. Immigration and naturalization records help the family historian to understand the movements of their ancestry as they relocated to different parts of the world. They often tell us name, age, gender, occupation, country of embarkation, and country of destination. In addition to these categories, the immigration passenger lists may offer place of birth, last place of residence, and name and address of a relative in the immigrant’s native country, depending on the year.

Finding Naturalization Records
Introduction
All Americans, except those descended entirely from Native Americans, descended from people who migrated to this continent within the past 500 years. This means that, at some time, all serious genealogists will need to use immigration and naturalization records. It is important for you to have worked on your genealogy enough to get back to the immigrant ancestor. In order to properly search immigration records, you will need a name (the fuller the better), a list of possible alternative spellings, an idea of the time the person arrived in this country, and an idea of where they lived in the country of origin. It is especially helpful to know through which port or coast they entered the U.S. If relatives or family records do not provide enough information to allow you to use the immigration records, the following sources may help. Obituaries and county histories often list a person's country, region or town of origin, and an arrival date. Birth and marriage records often give the birthplaces of a child's parents or of the couple being married.
