Today's Art Glass Stained glass, or more appropriate art glass, is all around us today. An explosion of interest in the last 30 years has give rise to many new and imaginative forms of this art. The rise of the individual artist, new technologies and the growing interest in stained glass as a hobby craft have all lead to what is being called a new golden age in glass.
New homes are frequently embellished with spectacular beveled glass entryways, stained glass bathroom windows and Tiffany style lampshades. Decorative panels are purchased just to hang in a sunny window. Marvelous hot formed glass pieces adorn tables, walls, shelves and fill windows. New artists are combining, creating and developing unique new forms and styles every day. What is Stained Glass Techniques/Construction The Gothic age Medieval Craftsmen ... General Information The Art History area offers a broad curriculum of courses that covers most of the major art traditions of the world. The program offers courses in many major western and non-western cultures, a breadth of offerings unavailable at most universities with larger art history faculties. In addition to offering lecture, seminar and special studies courses, faculty members organize field trips to Southern California museums and private collections to supplement classroom offerings. The Art History area faculty is professionally active nationally and internationally. The San Diego State University Art History student has a broader background than graduates of most other institutions, and the area's graduates have successfully competed for openings in graduate programs and subsequently for teaching and museum positions. Library holdings are improving to support the program, and together with other libraries in San Diego and Southern California provide faculty and students with excellent research facilities. Virtual Catalogue for Art History (VKK) General Information Deutsch Francais Italiano The "Virtueller Katalog Kunstgeschichte (VKK)" / "Virtual Catalogue for Art History" is a specialized search engine based on the technology of the well known KVK (Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog). It is an initiative of a working group of German art libraries, formerly known as the AKB (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Kunstbibliotheken). The working group is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, or German Research Foundation). The VKK has been accessible since September 1999 and is still "under construction." Currently the participating libraries offer well over 1.6 million bibliographic records including many articles and reviews from periodicals and collections. The VKK’s primary aim is to be a gateway to the holdings, and above all to the bibliographic data, offered by the working group’s art libraries. Together, these holdings form a virtual national art library, since the libraries in question coordinate their acquisition policies according to their different specializations. Under the general national acquisition policy of lending libraries (SSG), the two German university libraries belonging to the working group are responsible for art history; their acquisition policies are coordinated accordingly by the DFG.

Art History 232, Photography-Theory and Criticism. 3 hours General Syllabus:
a new version is distributed each quarter. Selected issues and artists are explored in greater depth for the 5 hour course. Texts, tests and assignments are changed from quarter to quarter. COURSE SUMMARY
This course will survey the history and evolving properties of photography as a cultural language and art making tool. All of the present and past uses of the medium will be discussed: illustration, documentation, portraiture, landscape, advertising, pornography, journalism, reportage, and art. The strategies of picture making in pre-photographic media were and continue to be present in many of these uses and these will be referred to in the course. The lectures will generally follow chronological order from Daguerreotypes to digital imaging, but each lecture, and its assigned readings, will include references to contemporary uses of photography as an art form, recognizing that we can only perceive the past in terms of the present. An emphasis will be placed on theory and practice since 1975 with a thorough coverage of all the components of current critical theory, and the effects of digital technology on the medium. Students will become familiar with both traditional and idiosyncratic histories of photography as an art form; with the careers and contributions of important artists who have used photography; with the literature of photography, including historical surveys, individual artist monographs, and critical anthologies. Students will get more out of this course if they have a working knowledge of general art history, and of world political and social history of the last two centuries, but these are not required.

Admissions Admission to Art History Programs Art History Program - University 1:

Commencing September 1998, most students newly admitted from high school and those who have completed less than 24 credit hours at another post secondary institution will complete the first year of their degree programs in University 1. In University 1, students will select courses from a wide variety of offerings in Arts, Science and other faculties/schools. This freedom to choose allows students to take the specific courses required for admission to one or more faculty/school while, at the same time, making it possible to sample or try out courses related to several different disciplines or professions. Students can therefore begin their university education with more options and make better career choices. After successful completion of University 1, students may apply for admission to their desired faculty or school or transit to Arts or Science for further study. For further information about University 1, please refer to section 1.2 of the Admissions section in the General Calendar The curriculum of University 1 may be completed on full or part- time basis, and consists of 30 credit hours: six (6) hours from courses offered by the Faculty of Arts; six (6) hours of courses offered by the Faculty of Science; six (6) hours of courses offered by either Arts or Science; and 12 hours from any faculty offering courses to University 1 students. Students will not remain in University 1 indefinitely but, after completing 30 credit hours, exit from University 1 to a faculty or school.
