Department Policy
The Ph.D. Program in Art History at The Graduate Center (GC) of The City University of New York (CUNY) is dedicated to the development of scholars, teachers, museum personnel, art critics, and other professionals, specializing in the history of modern and contemporary art and architecture, both European and American, as well as art criticism and theory; Renaissance and Baroque art and architecture; and African, Oceanic, Native American, and Pre-Columbian art and architecture; while providing students with a full general background in the history of art. Students in the Program are prepared to serve their discipline and their communities in all areas of cultural endeavor in which these areas of specialization may play a strong and meaningful role. Back to top Structure of the Program
The Doctoral Faculty consists of professors drawn from the GC and from each of the CUNY senior colleges substantially participating in the program. The faculty's specializations cover the Program's major fields of concentration: European art from ca. 1300 to the present, American art, and also African, Oceanic, Native American, and Pre-Columbian art. Courses in these major fields, in addition to courses focusing on earlier periods of the history of art, are given at the GC. Other courses covering the broad spectrum of the history of art are given at the senior colleges in their master's programs. Schedules for the courses of the GSUC and the senior colleges such as Hunter, Queens, City, and Brooklyn are available in late May (for the fall semester) and in January (for the spring semester) from the Assistant Program Officer.

Department of Art History and Theory
General Information
The Department of Art History and Theory
The Department was founded in 1967 as part of the Power Institute of Fine Arts and teaching began in 1968. For the decade following, it was still feasible to regard its central discipline as the history of painting, sculpture and architecture of Europe (with some reference to Australia). Since then, the Department has responded not only to radical transformations in the nature of art history itself, but to the explosion of 'visual studies' into the areas of film, television and the computer, into photography, design, costume, style and cultural studies. The Department has not only been responsive to this new development, but has actively helped to shape current thinking about the nature of art and the visual. The Department has also responded to its geographical and cultural location by introducing the study of Aboriginal and Asian Art. Why Study at The University of Sydney?
The Department of Art History and Theory at the University of Sydney is the only full service department of fine arts in any tertiary institution in New South Wales. The Department offers a full-year introductory course in first year (Junior Level), which includes the possibility of taking a practical option (Art Workshop) in video, photography, drawing, painting, etching, graphic design, screen printing, sculpture, printmaking, set design and ceramics. In second and third years (Senior Level), students choose from options in the areas of speciality of the Department. Students who gain a credit or above in 60 units of Fine Arts, including in a Special Entry course, may enter the Honours year. There are also postgraduate level degrees available.

Program Description Visual culture, as a contemporary academic field evolving from the historical study of art, investigates the production, form, and reception of images past and present. It incorporates the painting, sculpture, and architecture conventionally defined by art history, but it extends throughout the fields of visual imagery, beyond the cultural boundaries formerly drawn by academic tradition. The art history program at UCSC directs its cultural and historical investigation across a wide variety of representations in the cultures of Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Pacific Islands, from masks and mountains to mass media. Students of visual culture at UC Santa Cruz encounter complex questions raised from a variety of viewpoints. Foremost among these are questions about the social, economic, religious, and psychological influences on those who produce visual images as well as on those who view them. Also considered is how images form beliefs and values, taking into account the issues of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, race, and class. Questions of theory and methodology are addressed throughout the range of courses, although some courses emphasize these more than others.

How you can support this website!
Many Migwetches to Jonathan, who prefers that his last name not be used. This person, who is of Grand Portage Ojibwe heritage, had lost touch with his ancestral origins. He found some relevant info on this site, about Grand Portage and other Minnesota Ojibwe tribes and history that helped him and his kids get in touch with their Indian roots. He saw the problems I'd been having since the fire with hardware to replace not covered by insurance. So this man donated a 32 meg SIMM!!!! (computer memory). T hat's a really helpful kind of giveaway, an Indian tradition. As an individual, I cannot receive any funding. So I support this site (and the book reviews site) as best I can personally. Usually the only real heavy expense is phone. But losing a lot of equipment and software that has to be replaced is very hard. Help like this is really appreciated. It is so unusual I hardly know what to say except migwetch in every language, of which "Pidamaya!" "Thank-you!", "Merci beaucoup!" and "Dankeshoen" exhausts my linguistic knowledge. I was very happy to learn that materials gathered here either created locally or linked-to can help people to learn about their lost tribal heritage, and to find tribal contacts. Often I wonder if it is really of any use to anybody.
