GENETIC COUNSELING
Genetic Counselors provide information to individuals and families who have questions about genetic conditions or birth defects. They also help those receiving the information to process and understand it. To support individuals and families as they adapt and cope with genetic conditions, genetic counselors integrate short-term psychological counseling with their knowledge of the principles of human genetics. Most genetic counselors hold a master's degree in genetic counseling. Their graduate education involves courses in the hard sciences and the social sciences, as well as in bioethics, public policy and health education. Some work in prenatal settings, some in pediatric settings and still others in adult genetic clinics. Research Geneticist: Laboratory Geneticists: Application of modern genetic technology to agriculture, legal or police work, pharmaceutical development, and clinical medicine requires the services of sophisticated laboratories. These laboratories are staffed by scientists trained in molecular biology, cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, immunogenetics, and related disciplines. Genetic laboratory directors usually hold Ph.D. degrees or M.D. degrees with specialization in laboratory medicine. Most individuals becoming genetic laboratory technologists have four to six years of university education. Some genetic laboratories require their staff to have specific training and certification in cytogenetic or medical technology. Other genetic laboratories hire people with any relevant B.S. or M.S. degree as long as they can show an aptitude for the detailed technical and clinically important work being performed. The career of a laboratory geneticist offers the opportunity to apply genetics "hands on" to a variety of important problems. Clinical Cytogenetics in the NHS is a laboratory based science which involves processing and analysing the chromosomes of different types of samples with the purpose of detecting and interpreting chromosome abnormalities These results are communicated to a wide variety of clinicians. The work of the Clinical Cytogeneticist falls into three main categories: - analysis of blood from individuals with a variety of problems including congenital abnormalities, learning difficulties, reproductive difficulties and sexual development problems; prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities from amniotic fluid or chorionic villus samples; analysis of samples (usually bone marrow or blood) from patients with known or suspected haematological conditions, such as acute leukaemia, to aid in the diagnosis and management of the disease. The samples are cultured and harvested to obtain cells in the metaphase stage of mitosis, which are then spread onto slides. The metaphases are then banded to reveal a specific, reproducible banding pattern on each of the chromosomes.

http://www.pbs.org/gene/career/6_career.html
Genetics: The Field of the Future
A survey conducted in May 1992 by the American Association for the Advancement of Science showed that over the next decade, genetics clearly stands out as the field of the future.
There are many ways to use an education in genetics. In medicine, genetics is the basis for understanding the inheritance of genetic diseases, for providing counseling to families who are at risk for genetic diseases, and for scientific investigations into the molecular basis of genetic diseases and to effect cures. In agriculture, genetics is the basis of breeding new crop plants and livestock.
A rapidly growing biotechnology industry is using genetics to produce a range of products from pharmaceuticals to microchips. Sensitive genetic tests are increasingly being employed in criminal cases to identify individuals using only a drop of blood, and in food testing to identify minute contamination by disease-causing organisms. Biologists use genetics to identify the genes that function in the life of the cell and those that control the development of a complex organism from a fertilized egg.

Careers in Genetics and Related Fields
Genetics is a relatively new area of science. The current focus on new discoveries in genetics - through the Human Genome Project and other research - is creating an explosion of new job opportunities within the field. This list of careers in genetics is not a complete list of all opportunities available, but it provides a sample of some of the careers of people involved in genetics. New jobs and fields will continue to form as new information and applications are revealed.
Medical Geneticist and/or Researcher
Description
: Medical genetics is the application of genetics to human diseases. It encompasses various different areas, including laboratory science, diagnostic science and clinical science. A student desiring to become a geneticist working in basic research should study math, chemistry and physics in high school and college in addition to biology. In college, students would normally major in biology or genetics. However, students majoring in any one of the physical sciences with a minor in biology could also enter graduate school in genetics.
A Ph.D. is required for board certification as a medical geneticist. Students in a Ph.D. program in genetics would usually be supported by fellowships that cover tuition and living expenses. During the first and possibly second year of Ph.D. training, students take advanced courses in genetics and begin a research project. For the remaining two to four years of training, students carry out original research under the direction of a faculty member. After obtaining the Ph.D. degree, most graduates do research as postdoctoral fellows for two to four years, during which time they are supported by fellowships or research training stipends. Individuals would then be qualified to assume faculty positions at academic institutions or join the staff of a research institute or biotechnology firm.
