Page 3 of 7 [Previous] [Next] Evolutionary Mechanisms: The Theory of Heterozygote Superiority Verses The Selfish Gene Theory

send me this paper

A 9 page discussion of the mechanisms by which evolution occurs. Contrasts the theory of the selfish gene proposed by Richard Dawkins with that of the theory of heterozygote superiority held to by evolutionary biologists such as E. Sober. An overview of each theory is presented. The conclusion is drawn that although certain “selfish” elements do exist (such as is the case with certain highly repetitive DNA sequences) if these elements replicated to the point where it constituted the entire genome of the organism the organism would be sterile and without offspring the too successful gene would be doomed to death. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Page 6 of 7 [Previous] [Next] The Genetic Pathway and Developmental Evolution

send me this paper

A 7 page discussion of genetic pathways, specifically the direction of the orderly expression of specific gene subsets, a process which is controlled by tissue-specific transcription factors. Specific DNA target sequences are bound by these transcription factors and, in turn, interact with one another on either a cooperative basis or an antagonistic basis to control expression of the gene subsets. This interaction is aided as well by extracellular signaling molecules which both control and are controlled by the transcription factors. Ties these basic observations together with a review of research on species as diverse as Drosophila melanogaster and zebrafish. An additional 2 pages are appended on this paper which identify several references which could be applicable in an expanded review of this subject. Bibliography lists 13 sources.

    WHAT IS JGAP?
JGAP (pronounced "jay-gap") is a genetic algorithms component written in the form of a Java package. It provides basic genetic mechanisms that can be easily used to apply evolutionary principles to problem solutions. JGAP has been written to be very easy to use "out of the box," while also designed to be highly modular so that more adventurous users can easily plug-in custom genetic operators and other sub-components.
    WHAT ARE GENETIC ALGORITHMS?
Genetic algorithms (GAs) are evolutionary algorithms that use the principle of natural selection to evolve a set of solutions toward an optimum solution. GAs are not only very powerful, but are also very easy to use as most of the work can be encapsulated into a single component, requiring users only to define a fitness function that is used to determine how "good" a particular solution is relative to other solutions.

    How much is your puppy?
One day I recieved an e-mail. The complete message read:
I AM INTERESTED TO GET SOME MORE INFORMATION OF THE PUPPIES....WHEN AVAILABLE AND PRICES I think I must have been a little tired and irritable that day. This is how I responded: Is that really all you want to know? Are you sure you don't want to ask what steps have been taken to make sure that the puppies will grow up healthy and free of genetic disease? Are you sure you don't want to ask how the puppies have been socialized? Aren't you curious about the temperament and activity level of the parents? Does it matter to you whether the puppies have the qualities you expect in the breed - or will you be just as happy with a puppy who grows up very different? For example, what if it needs a lot more grooming and exercise than is normal for the breed? Do you care whether the puppy will be accepted back if you can't keep it - or do you accept the idea that of the common idea that once it is sold the breeder washes their hands of it. The dog you get will hopefully be with you for a long time. You deserve a health and sound pet, don't you? And you want to encourage people to breed dogs that will be healthy?

Have the final say by getting rid of your spam
By Ben Woods I've stumped myself with a recent philosophical discussion I had with, um, myself. Who has the last word in an email discussion? It's pretty obvious in a face-to-face discussion. The last person who talks has the last word. Even if you hold your ears and scream really loud, it's apparent who said the last thing. In a phone conversation, this is also easy to discern, unless Person A hung up without Person B knowing. Another possibility is Person A fell asleep, but snoring will more than likely follow. Sure, there are some technicalities, but it's still usually evident who had the last word.

    Hello Infoterra,
Since Doug LaFollette posted a critique of David Yarrow's work, I thought
some of you interested in the subject of champion trees would like to know
that there is a discussion now taking place on the mailing list, Ecolog-L,

the educational value and consciousness raising aspects of these trees,
among other considerations. I have attached David Yarrow's reply to
LaFollette's post, for those who are interested but are not going to sign on
    to the Ecolog-L list.
