Hardwoods Queensland Forum Discussion Paper. August 2001 Mark Lewty, Amanda Yeates, David Lee, Geoff Dickinson, Simon Lawson and Susan House.
The Hardwoods Queensland challenge.
The research project faces four major challenges. Firstly, there is little knowledge of wood properties of plantation-grown eucalypts and the processing technologies required for commercially viable products. There is also a limited understanding of which species will grow successfully on which site-types and until now, there has been no genetically improved seed available. Thirdly, there is little knowledge of the optimum silvicultural regimes for establishing and managing plantations. A fourth, significant challenge is the susceptibility of eucalypts to pests and diseases. The vision for ‘Hardwoods Queensland’ is to develop the resources, technologies and strategies to a stage at which the hardwood plantation industry is recognised as being economically sound, leading to major, private investment.

What are Electronic Mailing Lists?
Electronic mailing lists provide forums for Internet users to participate in discussions or receive information on thousands of topics. The software responsible for the management and distribution of these mailing lists to thousands of subscribers are commonly called "list servers". A list server automatically distributes an e-mail message from one member of a list to all other members on that list. However, not all list servers are the same. There are different varieties of list server software that allow a user to create and manage mailing lists. Digests, electronic journals, announcements, and discussion groups are some of the types of content that are delivered through the thousands of lists available on the Internet. When you subscribe to a list, your name and e-mail address is automatically added to the list. You will receive a standard letter of welcome (via e-mail) telling you about the list. From that time on, you will receive all mail (postings) sent to the list by its members. You may follow the discussions or join in on them. If you respond, you can send your response to the list (in which case, all members of the list will receive it), or to an individual on the list. You can signoff (unsubscribe) from a list at any time. You can also get a listing of all the members of a list and their e-mail addresses.

    [MOL] Genetic Breakthoughs.
Genetic breakthroughs open new avenues for cancer treatment BAR HARBOR, Jul 29 (Reuters) - Dr. Victor McKusick of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, opened Press Week '98 here in Bar Harbor, Maine, with the comment that the last year in genetics has been the "best yet." One important genetic advance in the past year was the discovery of "borders" to imprinted regions of the genome, Dr. Andrew Feinberg, also of Hopkins, told meeting attendees Monday. Studies performed in his lab show that imprinting affects regions of the genome containing 10-20 or more genes, rather than individual genes. These regions are bordered by non-imprinted domains, Dr. Feinberg explained. http://ipn.intelihealth.com/ipn/ihtIPN?c=192861

The network will provide a new national resource to support collaborative investigations into the genetic basis of cancer susceptibility, integrate this new knowledge into medical practice, and address the psychosocial, ethical, legal, and public health issues associated with inherited susceptibility to cancer. Up to $6 million in total costs for first-year funding of this initiative will be provided. http://ipn.intelihealth.com/ipn/ihtIPN?c=192876 http://www.meds.com/con_faq.html

At the core of TAO exists an organizational collective that seeks to understand and facilitate our ongoing operations. it's purpose is to hold consultation and enact systems of enquiry into how we organize ourselves (autonomy) and how this organization interacts (voluntary association). Members of TAO can subscribe to the tao-org email list for more info and updates on our organizing process. Email Address:
local org collectives TAO collectives in Toronto and Vancouver exist, with individual members participating from all over the world. We are working across national, cultural, and linguistic bounds, to establish and develop relationships with others around the world. If you're interested please email us at tao-org@tao.ca tao-org-tor
A considerable amount of the organizing (as well as server location) of TAO has originated from toronto. an organizational collective has been meeting formally at least once a month, sometimes as much as once a week. at present the group is working towards obtaining a collective work space (whether via squat, barter, or funds) as well as possibly financially supporting some of the contributed labour. whether an access point, community centre, worker co-operative, or child care facility, the toronto TAO folk feel the need for a focused and dedicated space for their organizing and work. we have also begun a union drive with the local iww branch. the email list that helps co-ordinate this local group is open only to individuals who have attended a tao-org meeting in toronto and are willing to participate in our organizing activities.

The Use Of Fetal Oocytes In Assisted Reproduction
Some researchers have suggested that fetuses eventually might be used as a source for oocytes in oocyte donation programs (1,2). One variant is to remove oocytes from the ovaries of aborted fetuses, mature them in vitro, and use them as donor oocytes for couples who need eggs as part of their IVF effort. A second variant is to remove ovaries from aborted fetuses and transplant them in women who lack ovarian function so the transplanted tissue eventually will contribute to the woman's normal reproductive cycle. Although at present the use of fetal oocytes for conception is hypothetical and speculative, its endorsement by some researchers and its critique by government-sponsored commissions make timely a discussion of its ethical dimensions (3,4). The argument for using fetal oocytes, if this use were feasible, is first to help meet demand for oocyte donation and second to avoid risks and complications for adult donors. Oocytes presently are obtained from women who donate extra oocytes from their own IVF attempts; patients who agree to donate incidental to hysterectomy or other abdominal surgery; and friends, relatives, or women unknown to the recipient who donate oocytes following hormonal hyperstimulation and oocyte retrieval. Many clinicians maintain these methods have not been sufficient to meet demand; moreover, each has limitations. For example, hormonally stimulating anonymous donors presents physical risks, is potentially exploitative, and adds to the costs of assisted reproduction. Maturing oocytes in vitro from fetal ovaries could create an abundant source of oocytes and it could reduce the costs of oocyte donation.

It's TIME! Finally, EMBRACE THE TWILIGHT is out! What I didn't know until 2/25, was that it actually went on sale 2/24! A bookseller told me. Up to then, I had thought it was on sale 3/1. I love a surprise. And this week I got two of them, when I also learned WALDENBOOKS is offering a coupon good for $1.00 off the price of EMBRACE in their latest "Preferred Reader" newsletter! Reviews are coming in, and so far they look great. Five Stars from Harriet Klausner at www.thebestreviews.com. (As we authors are fond of saying, "Harriet Knows!") Romantic Times gave it 4 1/2 and a great review. And so far feedback from readers has been great. I'm an absolute wreck as I watch to see how it does out there. Putting out a new book is kind of like giving birth. Crazy making!
