* * * The biggest experiment in human history has begun, with us as the guinea pigs and the planets ecological system as the test site. The genetech industry wants it all kept quiet, as they push products onto the market with unprecedented speed to create a 'fait accompli' from which we can never return. Consumer opinion has been ignored and consumers have been treated with contempt, as if they were irrelevant. There will be no open discussion about it, they are arrogantly determined to push this technology on us whether we want it or not.
Why? Because they see $billions in short term profits. What else? We want independent research whose starting point is the problems to be solved, NOT a technology to sell.
The Technology
* * * The industry prefers the term 'biotechnology' to 'genetic engineering', because it sounds friendly and technically sophisticated and of course leaves out the word genetic! The reality is that in the rush to cash in on the products, it's grossly under-researched. The scientific basis of genetic engineering is still little understood and relies on lengthy hit-and-miss tests to get results.
* * * Does this technology just speed up the traditional methods of developing new varieties by exchanging genes between similar species? No, this is a whole new ball game, cutting out genes and splicing in new genes from totally unrelated species. Scientists are giving birth to their bizarre creations as I write, transferring genes from fish to tomato, human to pig, scorpion to potato, and just about any other unsavoury combination you can imagine.

The world's last unpleasant experience will be a precisely dateable event. Two hundred years ago, powerful synthetic pain-killers and surgical anesthetics were unknown. The notion that physical pain could be banished from most people's lives would have seemed absurd. Today most of us in the technically advanced nations take its routine absence for granted. The prospect that what we describe as psychological pain, too, could be banished is equally counter-intuitive. The feasibility of its abolition turns its deliberate retention into an issue of social policy and ethical choice.

Biotechnology: Genetic Engineering
The United States is widely considered the global leader in the biotechnology field and an examination of U.S. patenting in genetic engineering technologies during 1990-94 supports that perception. T International Patenting Activity
Tabulated by priority year, this indicator provides a first measure of the extent and growth of each nation’s inventive activity. These patent family counts represent inventions important enough to be patented outside of the country of origin. During the first half of the 1990s, 3,411 international patent families were formed in genetic engineering with priority applications in the six countries examined; the largest increase in number of families was recorded in 1993 ( figure 1 ). Patenting activity in this six-country group accounts for over 85 percent of all families in this technology area. The United States is widely considered the global leader in the biotechnology field, and these data support that perception. The United States is the priority country (that is, the location of first application) for 63 percent of the international patent families examined here; Japan follows with 13 percent, the United Kingdom with 10 percent, and Germany with 7 percent.

Fast Forwarding To Future Foods
by John Henkel Take a peek into the supermarket of the near future. At first glance, products on display won't seem much different from those you are used to. Cucumbers. Peppers. Corn. They'll still be there. But amid all the produce and other kitchen staples, you're apt to find new versions of familiar foodsones that are custom "built" to improve quality or remove unwanted traits. Insect-resistant apples, long-lasting raspberries, and potatoes that absorb less fat are among the more than 50 plant products under study now that are likely to reside soon on grocers' shelves. These commodities will arrive courtesy of genetic engineering, a process that allows plant breeders to modify the genetic makeup of a plant species precisely and predictably, creating improved varieties faster and easier than can be done using more traditional plant-breeding techniques. Genetic engineering already is improving lives in areas such as disease diagnostics and treatments, but at the moment it is a fledgling economic force in the commercial food business. Though genetic engineering promises better and more plentiful products, genetically engineered foods may encounter a few obstacles to widespread public acceptance. Some consumers, along with a few advocacy groups, have voiced concern about the safety and environmental impact of these new food products. Some urge an outright ban on any genetically engineered foods. Others support mandatory labeling that discloses the use of genetic engineering. Still others advocate more stringent testing of these products before marketing.

A Scientist Challenges the Science
Since its first publication in 1998, Mae-Wan Ho's book , Genetic Engineering: Dream or Nightmare? has been widely acknowledged as providing the most sustained and reasoned challenge to many of the scientific assumptions underlying genetic engineering. It has now been reissued in a second edition that has been up-dated and redesigned to make it more accessible to the general reader In her wide ranging and comprehensive book, Dr. Ho hits out against transgenic foods, which have the potential to be toxic or allergenic; monoculture - a major cause of malnutrition world-wide; cloning - a scientifically flawed and morally unjustified process; the large-scale release of transgenic organisms, which she describes as "much worse than nuclear weapons as a means of mass destruction - as genes can replicate indefinitely, spread and recombine". The social and political implications of the involvement of genetic engineering science with big corporate business are also examined, with the author calling for a halt to commercialisation and for an independent public enquiry into the hazards involved.
