A challenge for Asia GRAIN and Kalpavriksh (India) February 2002 An International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture has been adopted on 3 November 2001 under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). The Treaty relates to plant genetic resources for food and agriculture, which its text defines as any genetic material of plant origin of actual or potential value for food and agriculture [Article 2]. The objective of the Treaty is the conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of their use, in harmony with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), for sustainable agriculture and food security [Article 1.1].

    39. NGB - The Nordic Gene Bank: A Plant Genetic Resources Centre
A plant genetic resources centre for Nordic agriculture and horticulture. Includes a database for searching for cultivars or accessions stored for specific taxa and a library containing information on the institutes publications.
    http://www.ngb.se/
NGB is a joint Nordic institute reporting directly to the Nordic council of ministers. NGB has a staff of thirteen. Due to convenience in working procedures the mandate species is divided into six working groups corresponding to different crops.
NGB stores material of plants of interest for Nordic agriculture and horticulture. NGB takes responsibility both for storing material of, and information on, the species in question.
Apart from searching our taxonomic database for information, or searching for cultivars or accessions stored for specific taxa, you can also search some ECP databases containing information about accessions at other European institutes.
The library at NGB contains information on the various printed publications from the institution. The summaries of some projects are available and all publications can be ordered from the institute.
The Nordic Gene Bank Supports Development of gene banks in the Baltic states and in the southern African region. The SADC Accession database is now available in a searchable format.
