http://www.engg.ksu.edu/kse/features/genengg.htm
Genetic Engineering The professor of my Modern Genetics class often brings articles to share with the class from current news sources dealing with the creation and use of genetically modified organisms. As with most new technologies, genetic modification is not fully understood by the majority of people and has thus been the subject of many heated debates. Some groups hold the position that by modifying the genetic structure of living creatures we are treading on thin ice. Others hold that the modification of organisms through genetic manipulation is no different than the selective breeding that humans have practiced on domesticated plants and animals for thousands of years. While there are a number of risks associated with the alteration of organisms at a genetic level, there are also a number of benefits that can, with proper regulation, outweigh all of these risks. However, the techniques used differ greatly from the past techniques used to control the breeding of various organisms. Background Alteration of the Genetic Code of Bacterium To best understand the debate on this subject, background information of how the genetic engineering occurs is first needed. The techniques were first developed using plasmids, circular portions of DNA found in many bacteria. Using the restriction enzymes, researchers can cut the plasmids at specific points and insert donor DNA into the plasmid. Both the plasmid and the donor are cut so that their ends have matching codes allowing them to be spliced together. The altered plasmid, now known as a "vector" can then be inserted into a bacterial cell. The cell will then reproduce multiple copies of the vector plasmid. When the cell undergoes division the two resulting daughter cells will contain copies of the modified plasmid.

"A more satisfying conceptualization of the role genes play in manifestation of traits is as merely a part of a complex process in which genes affect the organism, the organism affects the gene, the external environment affects the organism, which in turn, affects the gene's message to manufacture proteins, and so on. Reductionist explanations may satisfy our culture's need to explain through sound bites, but these explanations do not even come close to the complexity involved in defining 'what it means to be human'." -Lewontin,

Abstract
Applying genetic algorithms to scheduling problems is a powerful technique which has the potential to be used as a multi-objective optimisation tool. Implementations of multi-objective genetic algorithms (MOGAs) could provide an innovative and interactive decision making technique for adaptive scheduling in practical manufacturing applications. Justification and implementation of MOGA schemes for scheduling are discussed and compared.

CAN WE AFFORD TO IGNORE GENETIC ENGINEERING?
by Siobhan Mitchell
Article first published in 'Permaculture Magazine' No.17. Genetic engineering is now a fact of life and its consequences are at large in our society. In this passionately argued article, Siobhan Mitchell explains why this subject is too important to be ignored...
The patent number for umbilical cord blood cells.
Photo: Rebecca Price, Women's Environmental Network. Genetic Engineering is now a part of all our lives whether we like it or not - and surveys show we don't. It offers new assaults on old issues of protest, from human rights abuses (particularly those of indigenous peoples) to animal welfare, and environmental issues such as biodiversity. Its impact on our health is as yet unknown. There are also many parallels with the nuclear age - huge investment (this time by companies rather than governments); experiments cloaked in secrecy through jargon, and protected by patents rather than the Official Secrets Act; information held by the very few; and the blithely comforting assurances of safety by governments around the world. EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL... FOR CHILDREN
