GENERAL GENETICS ON-LINE COURSE Welcome the General Genetics On-line course. Its objective is to introduce students and the public in general to the basic concepts in genetics. The contents of the course will be built-up progressively, thus you should check back periodically to see the new additions. There is no time limit or pace to keep. Each user should set her/his parameters. This way, we hope everybody will enjoy learning a bit about the Science of the XXI Century. How to use the material: Although lateral links will be provided, it is recommended that first time users use the pages in sequence. Once they have become familiarized with the contents, they can use the materials more freely. Users should note that in order to make explanations more general, we have used color coding in the pages that explain each concept. In some cases, we might subsequently use specific examples. Users can find a help menu , and can also find explanations on navigational buttons , and a small glossary TABLE OF CONTENT

Regulation of the yeast gene by the global transcription factor Abf1p
Received: 22 November 1996 / Accepted: 26 February 1997 Abstract The gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae encodes a bifunctional glutamine amidotransferase: cyclase that catalyzes the formation of biosynthetic precursors for histidine and adenine. is activated by Gcn4p upon amino acid starvation and by the Bas1/2p complex in response to adenine limitation. Mutation analysis of the background revealed a polyd(A/T) stretch and a d(CT) repeat as essential elements for Gcn4p-independent basal transcription. The protein binding this element was enriched and identified as the multifunctional DNA-binding protein Abf1p. Abf1p binds specifically to the d(CT) repeat sequence, which represents a novel Abf1p-binding motif, and protects 17 nucleotides from digestion by DNase I. In addition, Abf1p binding causes bending of the promoter structure.

At The University of Arizona , the biological sciences are divided among three colleges: Science, Agriculture, and Medicine. Many of the departments within these colleges have geneticists among their faculty, which indicates the importance of genetics today. The Graduate Interdisciplinary Program in Genetics facilitates communication and collaboration among the geneticists and administers graduate degree programs in Genetics. At this time it consists of 46 faculty members from 10 different departments and 16 graduate students . Genetics is one of 20 Graduate Interdisciplinary Programs in the Graduate College Rod Adam and Bill Birky are beginning a study of the genetics and evolution of Giardia lamblia, a primitive eukaryotic parasite. They will be applying transfection, fluorescence in situ hybridization, sequencing, and phylogenetic analysis to see if this organism ever reproduces sexually, and if asexual reproduction involves a true mitotic division. The Genetics Program is administered by the Chairman and an Executive Committe Biological Sciences West
