What does NCBI do? Established in 1988 as a national resource for molecular biology information, NCBI creates public databases, conducts research in computational biology, develops software tools for analyzing genome data, and disseminates biomedical information - all for the better understanding of molecular processes affecting human health and disease. A Field Guide to GenBank and NCBI Molecular Biology Resources
    Columbia University, Health Sciences Campus
Molecular sequence databases are an important part of nearly all areas of biological and biomedical research. The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine builds and maintains the largest collection of biological sequence information in the world and develops software tools to access these data.
To assist life scientists in using these data and tools, NCBI will offer a training course at Columbia University's Health Sciences Campus on February 11th and 12th, 2003 entitled, " A Field Guide to GenBank and NCBI Molecular Biology Resources. " An overview of the training course is available at http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Class/FieldGuide/
The NCBI's "A Field Guide to GenBank and NCBI Molecular Biology Resources" consists of a 3-hour lecture and a 2-hour hands-on computer workshop conducted by NCBI bioinformatics experts. We are fortunate to have them come to our campus so please do take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.
The course will focus on GenBank and related databases covering effective use of the Entrez databases and search service, the BLAST similarity search engine and genome data and related resources. The course will also be featuring the NCBI assembly of the draft human genome, the MGSCv3 mouse whole genome shotgun assembly, the updated human and mouse map viewers and the new genome specific BLAST pages.

Programs you can run at the VGC
All of these programs can accept a new DNA sequence as query. Most can also retrieve a Genbank entry (by locus name). The query page has additional information about selecting queries and translation features.
    • Primer selection for PCR
      • Information about the program
      • Run the program: text or image version
      • Select primers to amplify an exact region of a sequence
    • Oligonucleotide Tm determination
    • Protein coding regions in large DNA sequences: translation (into fasta format), codon usage, and Codon Adaptation Index calculations.
    • Detecting atypical sequences using Zinfo
      • Information about Zinfo
      • Run Zinfo
      • A tour of some unusual regions of the S. cerevisiae genome
    • Similarity searches using Dst
    • Fast dot plots of a large sequence compared with itself
The programs below let one define a protein motif and then determine if it is encoded by DNA or is present in a protein database.
