The Right Moves: A Girl’s Guide to Getting Fit and Feeling Good
. Schwager T Schuerger M, 1998. Free Spirit Publishing, 217 Fifth Ave. North, Suite 200, Minneapolis, MN 55401-1299, 1-800-735-7323, softcover, 273 pp, $14.95, ISBN 1-57542-035-X.
A visually appealing layout and comprehensive table of contents make The Right Moves a quick and easy reference guide for girls looking for sound advice on eating a variety of nutritious foods, exercising for the fun of it, and keeping a positive attitude. Schwager and Schuerger combine extensive research, their own fitness expertise, and input from a registered dietitian to put girls on the road to a health promoting lifestyle while steering them clear of the detours frequently promoted by media, marketers, and miracle diets. Back to top Inconvenience Food: The Struggle to Eat Well on a Low Income "Inconvenience Food: The Struggle to Eat Well on a Low Income," is a new report published by Demos, an independent think tank and research institute based in London. The report builds on earlier work that highlighted the emergence of 'food deserts,' which has been defined as a place where nutritious food is hard to find (such as in low-income areas where the changing food retail geography has resulted in fewer food shops). The authors outline a strategy requiring joint action between the public, private, and volunteer sectors at the local level, together with a renewed commitment from the national government. The executive summary can be accessed free of charge as a PDF file at: Inconvenience Food: The Struggle to Eat Well on a Low Income

WELCOME TO A SMART PROJECT!
The following project is currently under progress by Rhode Island teachers. Although in some activities, the teachers have borrowed and adapted ideas from other teachers and current programs and sources on the Internet, the work is their own. The activities are displayed here in their original form , unedited as they have submitted them. In most cases, these are ongoing projects. The names, school districts, and email addresses of the authors are included. Please feel free to contact the authors with any suggestions, comments, or even participation.Teaching and learning are cooperative efforts.
PASSPORT TO THE WORLD
Overview:
This project is one phase of a larger school plan for an International Fair. Each grade will study a different country and prepare a booth to be presented at a family fair. The Internet will allow each grade to check facts and information for their booths. Math skills involving time zones, changing currency, graphing, and the use of measurement will be utilized. Animal and plant exhibits, meteorology displays, and mineral charts will aid in science discovery.

Introduction [Top of Page] Background: North Yemen became independent of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. The British, who had set up a protectorate area around the southern port of Aden in the 19th century, withdrew in 1967 from what became South Yemen. Three years later, the southern government adopted a Marxist orientation. The massive exodus of hundreds of thousands of Yemenis from the south to the north contributed to two decades of hostility between the states. The two countries were formally unified as the Republic of Yemen in 1990. A southern secessionist movement in 1994 was quickly subdued.
