Abstract
The Department contains several specialized groups, including the Laboratories for Global Remote Sensing Studies, Coastal Research, Geographic Information Science as well as several smaller groups of research interests. The Earth Systems Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) is a new, cross-campus research initiative that will bring together the Departments of Geography, Geology and Meteorology in a research Institute to further encourage interdisciplinary studies to address contemporary questions in Earth Systems Science. This will provide additional resources for research and funding opportunities to graduate students in the Geography Department.

GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM
Mission, Rationale and Student Outcomes
The general education program offers our students a liberal education, an education intended to help them become liberated, or free, persons, able to make informed and enlightened choices. We assume that a free and liberally educated person has the following:
  • basic competence in reasoning and communication; an awareness of wide range and variety of human knowledgescientific, humanistic, and artistic, including an awareness of at least some of the best that the human spirit has yet achieved; a sense of the interconnectedness of knowledge; a critical awareness of the ways in which knowledge is discovered and created; a sense of the ways in which knowledge must and does evolve.
To these ends our general education program holds our students responsible for a high level of competency in the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking and reasoning; it exposes them to a broad sampling of the range and variety of human knowledge and of the ways of knowing; and it attempts to instill a critical awareness of human knowledge and of its relationship to the human condition. All courses taken to satisfy general education requirements must be taken for a letter grade.

GEOGRAPHY (HUMAN)
HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES LIBRARY, Bibliographer - Karen Jensen History of the Collection Traditionally there has been a conscious division in geography between the physical and human aspects of the subject. This is reflected in the collection which emphasizes the human geography of North America, western Europe and the Third World, especially the Caribbean. Membership of the Shastri Institute has resulted in a representative collection of South Asian material. In addition there has been a fairly high level of acquisition of major monographic series and key geographical journals, including many European journals of narrow regional focus which are unique within Quebec. The development of collections pertaining to South American human geography has been superficial, excepting the Caribbean area and the Library's reference resources; neither are the collections strong for Asian material, excepting South Asia. African materials are spotty except for the economic geography of the area. The methodology and history of geography and historical geography is very good. Historians and classicists share an interest in the last.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Geography is a contemporary discipline with ancient roots. Millennia ago the Egyptians and Greeks measured the Earth and the heavens and developed explanations for the diversity they saw. Geographers today maintain that same curiosity about places and spaces. They examine both physical and cultural landscapes, focusing on the many environments that people inhabit, alter, create, and perceive. The Department of Geography at CSUS provides a wide range of courses for persons majoring in Geography. Lower division offerings in physical geography and cultural geography introduce students to the discipline. Upper division offerings add diversity. Students can choose among regional classes on many parts of the Earth, topical classes on subjects from population to landforms, and skill classes that include map making, map reading, spatial analysis, remote sensing, geographic information systems, and fieldwork. Students majoring in Geography are encouraged to enroll in elective courses which are consistent with their particular geographical interests and concentrations. A minor in another academic field is not required, but it may be useful for some students to have a second specialization if they intend to pursue graduate studies or professional work in geography.

GEOGRAPHY Geography serves as a bridge between the physical and social sciences. Empahsis is on the nature and distribution of environmental systems, human activities, relations between them, and their variation from place to place. Geography's uniqueness is not derived from the subject matter studied, but from the discipline's technical and methodological approach to the locational analysis of phenomena.
The geography major is performance-based with a research project required for graduation. The department offers four track options within the major and two geography minors.
The track options for a geography major are general geography, geoarchaeology, geographic techniques, and cultural resource management (CRM). The two geography minors are physical geography and cultural geography.
A minor in physical geography emphasizes the processes and forces that effect the earth's surface and the interaction between the environment and the humans living within that environment. Physical geography includes examination of the areas of meteorology, climatology, biogeography, pedology, and geomorphology. A minor in cultural geography concentrates on examining the spatial patterns of humans on earth and their demographics, distribution, economics, politics, language, religion, ethnicity, behavior, settlement patterns, transportation systems, cultural patterns, and urbanization.

Study Abroad Available The Human Geography course aims to contribute to an understanding of the relations between human beings and the environment. It demonstrates how many aspects of human life - economic, political, social and cultural are closely linked to places and the differences between these places. Human Geographers have always been interested in a wide range of issues and the last ten years have seen exciting new approaches to the subject. The academic staff provide teaching and research expertise across a wide variety of different themes and geographical areas. The Human Geography degree can be combined with any of almost thirty other subjects. It assumes no previous specialist knowledge in Human Geography, and the modules in the first year combine to provide a broad foundation before proceeding to the second and third years of study when you will specialise in aspects of Human Geography.

The Geography/Library Science (GeLS) curriculum of the University of Maryland is a full offering in computer based spatial analysis and information management one of the few such programs in the United States. GeLS is a joint venture of the College of Information Studies (CLIS) and the Department of Geography. Students earn a Master of Library Science (MLS) and a Master of Arts (MA) in Geography on completion of a minimum of 54 graduate hours. For a full time student, this course of study requires two academic years plus one summer term. CLIS Faculty and Facilities
The College of Information Studies employs 13 full-time faculty members and is especially strong in the areas of archives and records management, data processing, and information storage and retrieval systems. The Paul Wasserman Library in the College has extensive holdings in these areas. The Information Resource Center includes a large microcomputer laboratory with state-of-the-art equipment and technical support. The College's Instructional Development and Support Center (IDSC) provides audio and videotaping facilities, graphics and photographic laboratories and conservation equipment. Location
The Cartographic and Architectural Branch of the National Archives, located in the new Archives II annex adjacent to the UMCP campus, contains 2.2 million maps and charts including a unique collection of historic maps dating from the late 18th century to 1920 that provide early coverage of areas which later became states of the U.S.

GEOGRAPHY T he Department of Geography offers B.A. programs in Geography and Geography Education, as well as a minor in geography. The Department also co-sponsors the B.S. degree program in Environmental Science, and participates in other interdepartmental opportunities. Geographers investigate processes that explain the location of human and natural phenomena, as well as the interactions between people and their environment. A broad range of interests characterizes geography and reflects its position simultaneously in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Students who major in geography may, if they choose, specialize. The department has an excellent program in climatology, for instance, and research may be undertaken through its Center for Climatic Research. Other areas include environmental studies, biogeography, conservation, cultural-historical geography, urban geography, and geomorphology. Skills in Geographic Information Science (GIS), cartography, and spatial data analysis are also studied by geography majors. Students are required to take an introductory sequence of courses to provide a common background for all majors. During the senior year, majors may, at their option, undertake a research paper under the direction of their program advisors. A detailed brochure describing the geography program and requirements is available upon request from the department office.
