Geophysics - General Geology Return to Geophysics Main Page Buy Books About Geology This page has links to sites dealing with the geology component of geophysics in general. Physical Geology at Georgia Perimeter College . Pamela Gore. In our opinion this is certainly one of the best geological resources on the web. The site takes the form of a class syllabus covering the usual topics of physical geology including rocks and minerals, plate tectonics and the associated phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanoes, marine geology, and more. Each topic is covered in a thorough, well illustrated, and well written manner. Each topic also comes with a set of links to other web sites on the same topic. Highly recommended. The Geology of the Grand Canyon . Grand Canyon Explorer. A very nice and informative site. Grand Canyon Explorer takes you through the geology of the Grand Canyon and discusses the various rock layers that make up the formation. Learn where the various rock layers came from and the environments they were laid down in. There is an introductory clickable map you can use to examine each of the rock layers in turn. Highly recommended. A Virtual Field Trip: Oneonta to the Hudson River . Alexandra Moore and Andy Maillet. We think this is a marvelous site. The pages are arranged in the form of a trip through New York State from Oneonta to the Hudson River and in the process we learn about the geological formations in this region of North America and the basic geological processes that produced them. For every stop there are diversions to special topics and a series of questions about the things seen at the locality. Highly recommended.

Zabreiko In modern times mathematics has become an inseparable part of human culture, in which it plays a fundamental role. Throughout the centuries mathematics has been a crucial tool in the hands of mankind. It has allowed us to understand the fundamental principles of the universe, for example Newton's law of gravity, Einstein's equivalence of mass and energy, Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism, the laws of quantum mechanics for elementary particles, and even the Big Bang theory. The advances in interplanetary exploration and rapid development of computer technology wouldn't have been possible without mathematics.

http://www.unis.no/studies/GEOLOGY/general.htm
GENERAL The geology of Svalbard comprises a well-exposed succession of Palaeozoic metamorphic rocks succeeded by sedimentary rocks right up to the present-day Quaternary deposits. Long sections of the geological record are characterised by the interplay between tectonic controls such as basin development, fold and thrust belt formation and sedimentation. The stratigraphy of the Quaternary deposits reflects both the development of the present-day Arctic and climatic change through interglacials and glacials. Large parts of the archipelago are covered by glaciers, and the ice-free areas experience continuous permafrost. The present-day processes related to permafrost and glaciers can be studied in detail. The courses in Geology and Physical Geography are given at different levels. A undergraduate programme (series 200 courses) is aimed at general understanding of Arctic Geology. Students may also incorporate one or more of these courses in their curriculum in combination with courses from other disciplines. The graduate level (series 300) courses are suitable for M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. UNIS can offer excellent facilities during your stay at the institution, and you will become part of an active geology group.

Book Series:
ENCYCLOPEDIA OF EARTH SCIENCES SERIES
Field work, supplemented by laboratory studies, is a cornerstone for the geological sciences. Even with the advent of remote sensing techniques that enable geoscientists to interpret many features using high-altitude or space photography, visits to the field are still required for the purposes of ground truthing. It is essential that geologists become familiar with field methods in their special area of interest. And it is also important for those working in laboratories to have at least rudimentary knowledge of field conditions and sampling procedures because these often affect, either directly or indirectly, interpretation of lab data.
This volume provides an introduction to general field work through selected topics that illustrate specific techniques and methodologies. One hundred and twenty-three main entries prepared by leading authorities from around the world deal with aspects of exploration surveys, geotechnical engineering, environmental management. field techniques, mapping, prospecting, and mining.
Special efforts were made to include topics that consider aspects of environmental geology in particular those subjects that involve field inspections related to, for example, the placement of artificial fills, sediment control in canals and waterways, the geologic effects of cities, or the importance of expansives soils to environmental management and engineering.
