    Selected Water-Resources Abstracts

Maintained by the USGS Water Web Server Team, the Selected Water-Resources Abstracts Web site was compiled from several sources on the subject of water resources since 1977. Users can search by report number, keyword, author, hydrologic unit, state, and year. The database gives researchers easy access to specific information among the vast array of publications distributed by the agency.
    Geophysical Products

The Geophysical Products Web site is maintained and provided by the USGS Crustal Imaging and Characterization Team, who "devise new methods for understanding the Earth and apply these methods in interdisciplinary research projects to solve pressing earth-system problems." This comprehensive accumulation of resources includes Regional and State Grid and Database Compilations, Magnetic Reports and Surveys, Gravity Reports and Surveys, Electrical Reports and Surveys, MagnetoTelluric Reports and Surveys, Multi-Discipline Reports and Surveys, Geophysical Software, Fact Sheets, Geophysical Products available on CD-ROMS, geophysical links, and more. The single page site, although seemingly limited, does offer a great deal of information that should be of use to researchers and professionals.

REPORT ON THE 5TH IAS SPECIAL LECTURE TOUR 1999
It is an enormous privilege to be chosen to be the IAS Special Lecturer and thus have the chance to tour a range of countries and meet so many diverse people. The initial problem is to decide which invitations to accept. With great regret I turned down many from places to which I would dearly have loved to go, but, since the object of the lectureship is to reach out to those whose contact with the western world is or has been limited, I selected Jordan, India, Pakistan and 6 cities in central and eastern Europe, Dresden, Kraków, Budapest, Bratislava, Zagreb and Bucharest. I could not have chosen better. In every country I was cosseted and entertained and was able to meet a very wide range of sedimentologists and other geoscientists, in many cases bringing together people who rarely associate with each other. The topics I offered were "Controls on Clastic Coastal Systems", "Controls on Deep-water Clastic Systems", "Sequence Stratigraphy" and "Fashions and Models in Geology". The last topic I dropped from the repertoire early on to concentrate on the other three, all of which addressed the problem of keeping up to date with the latest concepts without being carried away with the latest fashion. I had with me a selection of slides, more than I could ever use, and sent abstracts and copies of figures to my hosts beforehand. They could then prepare a course book if they wished and I could vary the content, depth and style of each course to fit, as far as it is ever possible, the anticipated audience, no doubt with very mixed results. Length varied from a one hour lecture to half-day (3-4 hour) sessions with breaks. In some cases I combined all 3 topics into one lecture or course, concentrating on the highlights and linking the topics together.

The Deutsche Geologische Gesellschaft (DGG) is the oldest and largest German professional association of scientists in the geosciences. In 1848 the Society was founded in Berlin as a scientific organization open to all persons interested in geology, and Alexander VON HUMBOLDT and Leopold VON BUCH were among the charter members. Currently, the DGG comprises nearly 2,900 members. The primary goals of the Deutschen Geologische Gesellschaft are to promote geology in research and teaching, industry and government. For this reason, the Society is headed by an executive board and an advisory committee, each composed of members active in higher education and research institutes, business and geological services. A student member of the advisory committee furthers the interests of students within the DGG.
The Deutsche Geologische Gesellschaft represents the interests of German geologists within the public sector, in the media and in political groupings as well as in the German higher education system. The Society sees its foremost role as that of addressing problems and developments with in the German geosciences and of active participation in public discussion. Within the DGG, particular emphasis is placed on the promotion of young talented scientists in all geological disciplines within the framework of grants. In addition, numerous prizes are awarded each year by the German Geological Society and its foundations to geoscientists in recognition of outstanding scientific achievements.
